I measured excluding trim & glass edge thickness so comes very close to 72gal. now this would be more palatable, short by 4.5gal.
but if I try another way
A = 11/16" = 0.6875" is the change in water line for each 2gal addition in a 72gal bow front tank
B = 22.5" less 1/2" each for top frame rim & bottom glass/frame rim = 21.5" water depth or height
A / B = C = 31.27272727 units of water line change
D = 2 gal fill up
C x D = 62.54545455 gal
so the alternative empirical method (during water changes, measuring water line change with actual water fill ups) comes up with 63gal which is what I actually put in at the start when I 1st got the tank.
so I think they are overstated by 9gal not 10!
I know I know "relax, get a grip, get a reality check, stop beating a dead horse to death, give it up, gimme a break, please!!!"
so I live with it & move on (to another thread??!!)
I'm glad you brought this up. You know the gov't measure inflation by the change in prices in a basket of goods & services from a base year set of prices.
But they do not or refuse to acknowledge that shrinkage is a major factor in inflation.
so I agree with you chips and all!
a bag of chips goes from 5.5 oz to 5.25 oz to 5.0 oz within a year but they keep the price at $1.39 (oh excuse me - on sale it's always 99cents!!) then the shrinkage inflation factor is 10%.
but the increase to $1.39 (40cents if you are calculating) adds a 40% increase & that's now 50% inflation!!
but let's not forget that only 3yrs ago a bag of chips was 6.25oz, 1-3yrs ago 5.75oz & beyond 3yrs 7oz!! each yr. it shrinks but they do sell it for 99cents on sale when back at 7oz 99cents was the regular price!
so goes with so many other products. tho 2L soda bottles tried to do the same with Coke shrinking to 1.5L & keeping the price the same at 99cents. but as time went by they raised the 1.5L to $1.39 & made it 99cents as a sale of a bargain!
this time consumers fought back by not buying in the volumes they expected & if you notice the 1.5L disappeared or are not as plentiful. that's because pepsi & other soda/soda po/ pop companies didn't go along with this oligolopolistic maneuver! besides pepsi is better than coke & 7-up is better than sprite!
Not to add fuel to the fire, but was this purchased used? For some reason I had the idea it was purchased new with a 72G sticker on it. Not sure how I got that idea, must have just assumed.
If so . . . it might be a 65G bowfront.
The dimensions from your post are pretty similar to the dimensions in this link.
If it's a 65G, it would be pretty reasonable to see 63G of water in it, more or less, once you compensate for the thickness of the walls, items in the tank, etc. It would mean the seller thought his tank was bigger than it really was, which seems to happen all the time in both directions. I had someone try to sell me a 40G that they thought was a 90G, and another time, a 20G that was really a 50G. Craigslist and private sales, rare to find a seller who really knows what they are selling.
I realize I am a little late but have been very very busy lately. We have a 75 gal and it measures 48x22.5x18. Therefore yours would be a 72 gal. Invest in the Phython syphon hose. It's a little expensive but it is definitely worth it.
