Since I'm getting my 55g on the 26th or 27th of this month... I'm keeping my old 37g... I decided on goldfish.. The fancy ones since I like them better then the common looking ones. Can I get away with 3 and a few dojo loaches or 2 with a few dojo loaches? The reason for the dojo loaches it to clean up any uneaten food. Is it doable or no? I never kept cold water fish..and would like some help with this.. I'm also wondering.. could I use a sponge filter instead of a HOB filter? Since I found sponge filters to be a lot cheaper...

Well looks like I'm gonna be the first one to ask, what are the dimensions? From everything I've read about dojos loaches, a four foot tank is the recommended size, as they are very active and reach 8-12." In my limited experience and knowledge with sponge filters, I believe they are only suitable to tanks with light bioloads if they are gonna be the main filtration. Couple that with the fact that they take up a significant amount of tank space for the larger sized ones, I feel theyd be a poor choice for a goldy tank where over filtration is a necessity. From owning goldies in the past, they are constantly grazing the bottom for food, so you dont need a bottom feeder to eat food they originally miss, as they *will* find it and eat it. :)

I could buy a cheap filter rated up to 50 gallons.. that any HOB bigger then that can't fit with the current hood. But can I do 2 goldies in the 37? I know they get pretty big.. the 37g dimensions are...30"Wx12"Dx22"H.. I can look for some cheap HOB...may get a bag of gravel from Homedepot

Fancy gold fish need a minimum of 20g per fish..they get larger than soft balls and fins on top of that ( not in many years in less than 2 with good care) , ..so in a 37 you would be cramped with two, no other fish would be recommended in my opinion.

i would put the largest filter you can on that tank..and baffle the flow so it does not blow them around.

The Ovation 1000 is the biggest I can put on the tank.. The opening in the hood only allows for a 200 bio-wheel.. nothing bigger...Sor the internal filter is my best bet. I will be doing 2 weekly water changes on the tank...but going to wait till the tank is set up for goldies... I would do commons but they get a bit bigger...

I can't afford a huge canister filter... :[ The Ovation 1000 is within my price range... Money is tight for me right now... only paid every other week...

I'll do large water changes on the 37 twice a week...to keep up...

Then wait until you can afford it. May as well do it right the first time, than kinda half way do it, and then do it right. It'll save you the cost of the Ovation that you'll prudently replace, anyway.

so go with one fancy goldfish and no tank mates.
