Sure hurts when I see the prices you guys pay, i.e. LR $6 per lb rather than the £6.20($11) per lb.

Its true what they say the only exchange rate that has stayed constant is the £ for $.
 
I'm GLAD I didn't read this thread before I began, or I would never have done it - the cost projections would have been too intimidating! But, then I never would have known how fun and challenging it could be, and I wouldn't have it any other way. The lfs here is having a sale on Fiji lr next week. Members of the club get a 10% discount, Final price after discount: $4/lb!

My 29g reef is well over $600 ($600 was when I decided to stop keeping track of how much it costs). The freshy tanks are unkown as far as cost goes, but I haven't spent nearly as much as I was able to get a lot of stuff used.

my exspense for my main 10g was:
tank & heater: $10, bought used at a thrift store. the heater was still attached!
gravel, filter, background, decor, shiphon, net: $20. I got this all at a garage sale, along with my other 10g and air pump.
hood w/bulb: $43 (ouch!)
food: $15.33 total
dechlorinator:$3
algae pad:$2.50
filter bag, carbon, and filter sponge: $15
aquarium salt: $2.40
plants: $12.50 total
fish: $24.50
total: $148.23. not a lot compared to some other people here.

10g fry tank:
already had everything except for a sponge filter, which was $9.
