How to euthanize a fish

a rock or slicing it's head is nearly impossible with a large goldfish. I would suggest following the clove oil method (directed in this thread). Visit your local drug store for it in the toothache section. It is in a tiny bottle (usually brown) and may even say eugenol oil.

Okay no it was not a joke i was just wondering why(not if it where inhumane). if it where for the fact the spread of diseas, but if it where that then there is no threat, because modern waste water treatment plants completely clean the water to an above safe level.

It's not about contamination, it's about cruelty. A fish on it's last legs thrown into a sewer system or a septic tank is cruel. "Out of sight, out of mind" doesn't work if you realize that they're not "just fish".

imagine the trauma a fish would go through to be removed from its tank water, put into a water system filled with chlorine/chloramine (if you're in a city, even if not theres at least amounts of toilet bowl cleaner). If that wasn't even to burn their gills (stick ur head in a bucket of powdered chlorine, like at a pool, it sucks let me tell you) and cause death, then then go down a crazy series of tubes to be eventually dumped into a massive sewer treatment. I doubt the water can be considered "clean" to something which is breathing it. Even if it is considered clean by human standards, that means it is being filled with chemicals which are meant to kill off any harmful bacteria, chemicals which seriously mess fish up. It is a horribly cruel way to end a fish's life, and you can only pray that the amounts of cleaner in the bowl or the shock of going down a whirlpool kill the fish before anything else does.
if you're merely talking about flushing a dead fish...no worries, although if the fish had tb i wonder what damage that could do...

I usually just behead large fish.
In my early years, I just threw them down the garbage disposal.
I guess I can see why people would get grossed out by that but I have caught and cleaned so many fish in my time, it really doesn't phase me.
I would, however, have to agree that clove oil is the most 'humane' way of killing fish.

No offence to anyone here but in my opinion flushing a DEAD fish is not bad, actually it is better because it dose not give bacteria and decomposers something to feed on in a land fill.

But SMASHING IT WITH A BRICK:confused: should be a last resort. other wise you can nock it out and then freeze him/her.

slicing its head in one slice is not that dificult if you fish alot and clean fish...

but i guse i should pickup some clove oil for when a fish is unsavable.

But cutting the head off is considered ok....

First off, let me say that I hate to lose any fish, and can remember each and every one that made the journey to heaven......I took a lesson out of each tradgedy and made sure the same mistake didn't happen to future aquatic friends.

Around here, it's survival of the fittest. I don't take chances. I'm not in the habit of killing fish, but when the time comes and it's 1 sickly fish hangin at the bottom of the tank....goodbye.

Sorry if that offends. But life is sometimes cruel.
