I'm not going to be much help. The smallest tank I've used for guppies is 10gal, and that was simply a hospital tank / fry tank. Though a 10 gal. is sufficient for a few guppies. I am horrified each time I see a completely stocked 10 gal. tank. Reminds me of other parts of the world where there's no privacy!

My advice is get a larger tank (10gal) . From there, I'd suggest choice B) if you want all of the fry to live, choice C if you want few of the strongest fry to live. Or use your 5.5 as the fry tank.

For my 4 new guppies, I have provided them a 20gal. It provides more than enough space for them to swim and hide, including a small forest for the fry to hide in. Because these are albino reds, I am re-locating the fry that I net out of and place them inside a nursery of a 30 gal. fry tank. From there I will separate them as they mature. My guppies live in mansions. I ordinarily do NOT use a 30gal for fry, but I've had it out already and wanted to use it for something, rather than bring out the 10gal. which is currently stored away for when I decide to quarantine a new fish (then I will bring back)!

some of those critter keepers are very large, but a wee bit more $ than a bare 10gal is just $13.00

less if you find them at a yard sale,. some times,..lol some of those people want big bucks for them,..

As i already stated a few times they are going to be upgraded to a bigger tank just not right now, i have a 20g long with just 11 celestial pearl Danios in there so i don't crowd my tanks.

Right now I'm trying to catch the fry and putting them in a container, no they are not living in the container, just to hold them as i catch more, 11 so far.

Other - I would suggest moving all the guppies to a bigger tank, plant heavily and feed small live foods (baby brine shrimp, microworms, walter worms, and banana worms). I have a 55 filling up w/some FBM's and a 30 breeder starting to fill up w/albino reds.

Yes, I keep guppies in 2, 10 gallon tanks and have to say quite a few at that! I also have them in a 20 and a 29. I raise them for one of my LFS. I randomly cull when there are too many and use them for feeders. The LFS usually has no problems selling them so it isn't often they get culled as feeders.

I have found the 2 tank option being the best and cheapest way to go when looked at on a long term basis. You just need to decide what you want to achieve and then set up accordingly. The size of the tank matters only when you are looking at keeping them long term. I have found I can keep 2-3 per gallon as I perform weekly maintenance and have plants in most of the tanks. Java moss is very good at providing hiding places for the fry.

I not sure why everyone is getting a little on the defensive side about me keeping 6 guppies in a 5.5g tank? I mean thats about 1 gallon per fish, which is not that bad and i know a lot of people who keep 20 or more guppies in a 10g thats not planted and has a crappy filter with no weekly water changes. My 5.5 is very planted, weekly water changes, a very good filter, nice heater at a steady 80, overall it a very good tank that has just enough fish in it. I have stated that i am moving the fry.

I'm not accusing anyone of saying that but i know you guys are thinking it lol

OK i think my first female is done giving birth, shes all skinny now lol and hungry as a monster. I got a total of 12 fry that i managed to get out of the tank and i think i got 90% of them if not 100%.

I'm setting up a 5.5 planted right now for the fry and later they will go in a 20g(Long, i love long tanks, more surface area) or 10g.

The fry are going to be used towards a little experiment/Project of mines that requires young healthy Guppies.

Thanks, excuzzzeme I'm not directing this towards you just because it looks like i'm posting it to you, but I'm just clearing things up. I don't want anyone to criticize me i just asked for the best way in your opinions on how keep the babies alive, not on how i should take care of my fish, see now I'm getting defensive its contagious.Don't spread Hate but spread the love!

BTW i found out i have 1 male albino red guppy, cool right?

Peixe,

I hope you didn't think I was being critical of you and your set up (I really didn't pay much attention to it :o) - I was just responding to your original question - what is the best way for the fry to survive. A big tank w/heavy plants and live food will give them the best chance - that's all. If you want to keep a few guppies in a 5 gallon tank that is fine also - you will just have to get the babies out quickly unless it's heavily planted. Also - some guppies are more prone to eat their young than others. Good luck on your project.

My eyes widened as I read that. Please share if you follow through with the project. I am always interested in reading about stuff like that. :)

Good luck!
