It's because people misspell it "chiclid".
Were it a classical Latin word, it would be "keekh-lid". But it's not, it's a biological Latin word and so it's pronounced according to the conventions of the language you're speaking - in this case, "sick-lid". I don't see any particular merit in the "seeklid" halfway house.

I think we should keep this thread alive!
The more I think about this word "Cichlid", the more I think it needs to be changed. It just messes people up. I think if we changed how it was spelled, then we would all say it correctly.
Post how you think it should be spelled.
I like: sicklid. We can also make it even harder to spell and pronounce by spelling it: physichlid.

I would just leave it as cichlid cause then I would cause ppl and companies to spends lots of money. Also it will confuse the people that didn't know about the change.
Chick-lids make them sound like gum instead of fish.. I'm the only one I know in the real world that talks about fish- I've always said it sick-lids...
