A cool new LFS has 2 huge oscars for sale. They are 3 years old and housed with a couple other large fish. The LFS is selling them to make room for more easily cared for stock I guess, but the price is right $80.00 takes the pair (proven breeders). Will these two 7 inch or so Oscars do well in a 40 or 55 gallon? its return season and I might just have to splurge to get these beauties.. Plus with a little work they could generate a little bit of cash to pay for their food and care. I think they would probably work in a 55, just want some opinions. They can't be in anything much larger than that now, perhaps even a 40? and they seem fine. Watched the guy feed them and it was amazing, they didnt even seem to mind a bit of affection. I would probably do a fishless cycle before buying, so this would be a good oppurtunity to learn a bit more about that. Any input is greatly appreciated!

They would require a 75 gallon and definitely not a 40 their growth would stint but there organs and such would continue to grow causing a slow painful death. (I love saying that.)

I would go with at least a 75 gallon. Oscars are big fish and produce a lot of waste. A breeding pair (if you can sucessfully raise the fry) can pay for themselves if you've got a LFS that's interested in buying from you.

if they are only 7 inches long, they are either about a year old, or already stunted. 75g MINUMUM, a 100g would be way better though.

If they're paired and compatible with one another, a 75g is as small a tank as you should keep an Oscar in. If you're tight for space, keep in mind that a 110g tank takes up the same amount of space as a 75 (same footprint - 18" x 48") and provides additional water volume.

you really need the extra water volume too, as oscars are very messy fish and will produce a lot of nitrates. unless you want to be doing water changes three times a week, i'd say go for a 110g.
