Humanely Euthanising Fish

That's good, she's only a tiny balloon molly...so doesn't it hurt at all?

Read my reply in the other forum before you decide to go ahead with this. Yes the ice method will not hurt the fish. Pretty much putting a tropical fish used to water in the upper 70's into water thats 32* cold will instantly stop its nervous system causing a painless and quick death.

After researching on the internet, I have fund a pretty humane way of killing 'SweetPea', as I like to call her. She will be dearly missed. :(
Anyway, here it is-

It is called the Tempreture Shock Method. You basically freeze a container of water in the freezer, not freezing it solid though, just til' it's freezing cold. Then you frop the fish in. The severe diffence in tempreture will painlessly shock the fish's nerve system and the heart, brain and other vital organs will immeidiatly shut down.

Sound ok, or am I about to toture instead of gently send her of to fishie heaven?

We probaly posted our messages at the same time or something becuase I didn't see yours before I posted mine :o

Ok, if you're sure about the ice method...but it's gotta hurt just a teeny bit...

No, I've got to stop putting it off. I will do it now, and i'll post back and inform you how it went. God i'm nervous...

I've done it! I feel so guilty, but I know it was for the best. I put some freezing cold water from my pond in a container nad made it even colder by putting it in the freezer for a bit. Then I netted the half dead SweetPea and tossed her in. Actually, she got stuck in the net, so it wasn't as swift as I had hoped. I almost broke down in tears when I saw her little fins wiggling. I'm pretty sure it took longertahn a few seconds...but I didn't have time to count as I immediatly put a towel over the container and stuck it in the freezer. How long should I wait? And how should I get rid of the body?

This is bogus, in my own personal experience. I have tried this several times in the formative days of my fishkeeping with water chilled to just above freezing with ice and dry ice, and the fish still thrashes for several minutes before succumbing.

I destroy the head (if the fish is large) or just smash the whole thing (in the case of small fishes) these days in order to kill them instantly.

well as for the getting rid of her body you could do the old fashoned flush...I guess...but If you really loved her then you could do what I did when my bro's betta died...make a 'coffen' out a LOT of foil.....and tape it shut like a...then burry it in you back yard...my guess is that the foil prevents it from getting eaten by the worms...
