I recently got a used 300w eth but cant get it to work right. I have it on a 55g. The room temp stays around 70f and the no mater how high I turn up the Hydor the tank temp will only get up to 75-76f anyone else have the same problem or know what could be causing this? The light turns on on the heater itself and like I said the water temp is higher than the room temp so I think it is working but I want my tank temp at about 79-80. Could the fact that I have a smaler canister with lower flow rate be the problem? Or is the heater prob just bad? Thanks for any help!

Sounds like the heater or your understanding of how it functions is the problem. How long do you wait to see a temp increase? These types do not shoot up the temp in a hurry. They work, albeit at a slower pace. A fixed heater heats the surrounding water faster and then it is transferred slowly to the rest of the tank. In this case the water continually passes over the heater, spends less time in contact with it, and therefore takes longer to heat up the water but it does it more uniformly. They eliminate hot/cold spots better than the conventional heaters.
I also thought of that. I let the inline run alone for 3 days I would think that would be plenty of time. I was nervus to let the tank stay standing at 75 with no noticable change for that period of time, didn't want to start loosing fish. Also when I hooked it up the tank water started at 80f and droped to the 75 mark so its not like it had to reheat all the tank water back up to 80 it just had to continue to maintain the temp. Im starting to think the flow rate is the issue but then again if the the flow rate is low the heater should have more contact time with the heating element right?
Yes the water would have more contact time. I think a bit of investigation is called for. Such as what is the recommended flow rate? What size hoses are recommended?...etc. Once all the variables are eliminated that leaves the heater itself to be suspect. You might want to try to contact the manufacturer and see if they can offer any assistance.

does the light ever shut off?
if the light's shutting off, it is indicating that it has reached the desired temperature. if this is happening, you could have one of two problems: the hydor thermostat is broken, or your thermometer is incorrect.

Did you clean it well before using? I would have used a bleach solution. I run 2 of their heaters- one of each wattage- and they work fine and have for a number of years. Both are inline with Eheim Pro II canisters.
Put a thermometer at the output water or use your fingers.It should be coming out around 90 if it`s working proper.Then you might have to deal with the flow of water.
I know this thread is kinda old, but, does GPH affect the heater's performance? If the water is slow(100 GPH) would it help heat the water right? What about if your GPH is very high like 250, would it delay the heating capability of the inline heater? Thanks folks.
