So yesterday was an absolutely awful day at work. Right off the bat I sold two Black Moors to a woman and her little granddaughter who also purchased the fish's future home: one of the smallest bowls we carry. Despite my efforts to persuade her to buy a proper tank and provide good filtration she proclaimed she could not afford to do so. The little five year old went so far as to proclaim "There are plenty of fish in the world that go everyday without a filter and they do just fine." Ahhhhh ignorance is so blissful especially at such a tender age.

Later, I was talking to a couple who had just set up a tank and couldn't understand why their fish were dying. I asked of the tank had been cycled and they said "Oh yes, we had it running for a day." I proceeded to explain their tank was not cycled. A fellow employee of mine whom has been working in the department as long as me, but whom I hardly ever work with interrupted me and said "Oh yes, it can be cycled in a day. Just throw some Cycle in there!" "No, that product does not work," I replied. "Yes, it does it says so right on the box...." "NO IT DOES NOT!" Everyone went quiet. I then went on to explain the nitrogen cycle.

The highlight though was the large, ok I might as well say it, ENORMOUS, LOUD and rude woman who came in, purchased a 20 gallon starter kit, a female betta, two large red orandas, a larger calico ryukin, and two common plecos. About the only piece of advise I gave her was that she should cycle her tank first which was of course promptly ignored.

Why? Why did I do this? To be honest I'm tired. I'm tired of talking. I'm tired of informing. No one listens. No one cares. Fish don't have cute fuzzy bodies.....I guess they must not be worth anything. No one wants to learn. I can't stand it anymore you guys. I really can't. This is the only place where people really think that fish are intelligent....that they do feel pain like other animals. You're the only ones who care. Campaigning to make big chain stores carry the right information is nice, but we need to be doing more than that. Laws should be passed. Fish should fall under the same cruelty standards as other animals. Something can and should be done. I'm so tired. :shakehead:

this stuff happens all the time at LFS.

all you can do is give the correct advice, and smile.

sometimes, they choose to listen, other times they don't.

all you can do is try your best to give them what you feel is the proper advice.

don't worry about whether or not they actually listen to you.

that is out of your hands no matter how hard you try.

the customer is not always right (certainly not in this hobby LOL) but they can spend their money however they wish.

its their choice.

hang in there. In the world of LFS's there are good days and bad days.

for every experience like this, you will get a customer that comes in and praises the ground you walk on for your advice that saved their beloved fish.

there are ups and downs.

Hang tough! Keep at it!

one of the reasons why i will not hesitate to give a fellow customer advice at a LFS.. because if i can divert the amount of ignorance from that particular person's workday, perhaps he may remain motivated enough to stay.

if the person chooses to blow me off and ask the same question to the worker, then maybe, just maybe, they'll listen twice. MAYBE.

and if the worker is a dummy, then perhaps i'll have properly educated a fellow customer without them having to go through 6 orandas in a 1g bowl before realizing that it just won't work.

LFS workers like you are very appreciated.. you do a great job, and it pays off with the little things. :)

tough day.

I hope you get some wins as well - the people who you help get started and stay in the hobby for life.

Well why not? Why not ask state and federal laws to ammend and add at least a few specifics about proper animal care for fishes and aquatic pets? Why not want better for an animal?

Afterall, if no one takes a stand for it, it'll never happen.

beefsteak, I've been feeling exactly the same way the past couple of weeks. It is just exhausting, when all you want to do is help. Yet we get beat down for it, over and over again.

It is the customers that listen, respond, and *care* that keep me going. I see maybe 3 of those a week. It's tough.

You are being honest and you are doing your job as well, no one can ask for more!

beef & others... hang in there, I wish I would've met you and I would have listened! If you are only able to get through to 1 out of 20 customers... well, bravo! That's more people out there with a clue that might talk to their friends and family...

I do agree that more needs to be done to get people to realize fish are more than just "fish"... are live "prizes" allowed at fairs or festivals in your city? Easy place to start...
