I broke all the rules

one of the problems out there is that it is hard to get good help for the wages that most LFS's offer.

even as assistant manager in the store where I worked, I still make almost 3 times my hourly rate that I was getting there doing what I do now in my feild (wastewater treatment).

I am not making excuses, I am just saying that part of the reasons that there exists this problem with LFS employees is that the wages are not that great.

trust me I know :) I worked at a LFS for 8 years while going through school and after while looking for a job in my intented feild.

finding good help can be tough at lower pay rates.

and the LFS's wont pay really good rates that they need to get lots of really knowledable and experienced people in there.

another forum said it best:

there are two types of fish store employees:

those who will work for 7 dollars an hour and don't care

and

those who ill work for 7 dollars an hour and are really good but won't be there long.

this is part of the problem.

ps this is not in any way meant to put down anyone that works at a LFS. I worked at one too for a long time so I am part of that group. :)

As another employee of a chain pet store, I have to say just hang in there. During my shifts, I always look foward to seeing some of the regulars. Usually they are only in to buy supplies, but they have given me alot of knowledge and they can get me to smile after a day of dealing with bad mangement, customers & stupid coporate policies.

Personally I would rather go into a LFS that would refuse to sell me something I shouldn't have ;)

I like stores that ask me questions about my current set up and like even more when they are knowledgeable enough about it that they can carry on a conversation. I surely dont know everything, so when they prescribe something different I value their opinion. If the store doesnt care enough to care about my setup and my success; I dont have any reason to make it a normal stop.

We should, like italy, ban the sale of goldfish bowls and punish the mistreatment of fish. I hate it when people say they cant afford a better tank......IF THEY"RE POOR/ON A TIGHT BUDGET WHY THE HECK ARE THEY BUYING FISH IN THE FIRST PLACE!!! ITS NOT A ONE TIME INVESTMENT!

Its stories like this that bring me closer to insanity.

Well anyway, luckily here in northern illinois, fish arent very popular (at least where I live) and those who do happen to own fish are generally upper-middle class and tend to give their fish AVERAGE care, which is beter than usual. I stayed at the local petsmart once for 3 hours when my car tire popped. Even on busy sunday, I didnt see many bad fishkeepers, which does give me hope.

At the store where I work, you can't refuse to sell someone an animal. We can refuse to give a refund or credit if we know they aren't caring for something properly, but we can't refuse an initial sale.

****... what store do you work for?

My friend has been denied fish at petstores more than once (bc he was using them as feeders)

I was giving advice to a woman at a pet store recently, she must've overheard me talking to a guy about his tanks and such and so figured I must know a thing or two. Well she was asking about what she needed to do to have a fish in a very small tank at work. I told her she could have a betta and thats about it. I told her about changing the water every few days and what not. Well she said "I don't want to buy a heater and filter and all that stuff. I just want to keep one of those in a little tank on my desk. She was pointing at all the fish that NEED a heater and a filter and all that stuff she didn't want to buy. I walked away shaking my head. I just hope the guy I spoke to found us here. I told him all about AC and he seemed very interested. She needs to find this site more so than he.

Hang in there and continue to fight the good fight. Passion is a great thing, but be careful what you ask for when you say you want "laws." I used to work in a pediatrician's office, and I was often frustrated with certain parents. There are more laws now than ever, but I don't know that kids are treated better now than they were 50 years ago.

you know what? this is absolutely ridiculous!

i occasionally wonder if adults have any common sense at all. i mean, before i got my 20 gallon, i looked up the fish i wanted and whether they could mix with my betta. i'm currently going through cycling and i'm roughly halfway through that process. i listened at my lfs because i KNOW i don't know too much about fish and their needs. my fish are doing wonderfully, building up weight and strength. and i'm only seventeen.

BOOYAH! take that, dumb old man who wanted freakin' oscars!
