I FINALLY found kuhlis!

Long time lurker here. I got my Kuhli's about a year ago, but they haven't grown much since I got them and never I see them eat. They'd be about 1 1/2" to 2" long and they are a very dark brown. Will get some photos when my hood is fixed.

Also, what sort of environment do they like?

Sand or soft gravel as a substrate is best. They also like to have hiding spots. The more hiding spots they have the more secure they'll feel, and the more likely they are to come out.

From what I've seen, mine were pretty big when I got them, too. I got one smaller one, but the others were about 2.5 or so inches when I got them. Are they black? There are black ones, and banded black and orange.

Well I went back and got 2 more last night. They said they will be getting another shipment in a few weeks. It is awesome, now that I have 3 they swim around all the time and they have gotten my other fish to come out of hiding. I think it would be awesome to have a whole tank full of them, they remind me of water snakes, So now its time for a dumb question. Will they eat my Malaysian trumpet snails?

Nope! Not snail eaters. :)

I did it again! I was at another fish store (owned by the same store as the other, just different location) and was looking at tanks and saw 'black gold kuhli loaches' for $1. I didnt see any so asked if they could move stuff around to find some. Well they had 1 left so I got it. It is wider than my others and not black or gold at all but red. The color red is like red earthworm, any suggestions on what kind it could be?
Another question. I feed my other fish blood worms and brine shrimp and saw one of the kuhli's eating them, is it alright for them to eat?

of course it's okay! i'm sure they loved the change of diet.

Ok. Do you know what kind of kuhli my red one could be? It is the same shape as the others but thicker and solid red. I would offer a picture but it doesnt want to cooperate, lol.

i don't believe there are any other loaches similar to kuhlis, so it's probably just a darker variety of the kuhli loach, possibly bred to be more red than orange.

all black kuhlis are are the regular kuhlis, but they're all black instead of striped. so if they're the same size and shape, but striped, then they're just regular 'ole kuhlis.

Kuhlis are one of my favourites too! - and can be hard to find here too.

clb, yours look healthy, nice colour considering they are in transport.

Since I've had some in a tank with sand substrate, I've noticed they huff sand out through their gill openings, which I never knew they could do!

For the record, mine ignore snails and shrimp (except when wrestling for food).

Hey, do you (or anyone else?) know what the type of Kuhli in your pic is called? I have 7 loaches, 6 I bought from Frank, from Frank's Aquarium (picked up in person, saved a bunch on shipping) and 1 I saw at another store. I've been to like 10 or more stores here in NYC and I've only seen Kuhli Loaches in ONE of them. The loach is bigger then all 6 of the other ones (probably just older), but instead of having solid colors, it had gaps or circles in the black patches like the one in your picture. I was just wondering what the difference was.

I'm afraid I can't help. The ones I see here in Sydney are all similar looking (except for the black ones, which I've only seen online.)

"
There are several distinct but very similar-looking species in the genus Pangio. They can be distinguished by counting the number of dark vertical bars on the body. P. khulii has 15-20 bars.
"

This is from seriouslyfish.com (which I have found to be a reliable source of information) in their listing on Pangio kuhlii. I have unhelpfully cropped out the end of the fish in the photo, but looking at the original, it seems to have 12 black bars, so by their reckoning is not P. kuhlii.

Now you know as much as I do - not much!
