I got my Khuli Loaches!

I love thier faces...they remind of a seal. I have a banded one that lives in a piece of driftwood in my 29 tank. At feeding time he peeks out, sniffing around for crumbs. I've been targeting some food on the log for him since the tetras are pretty quick to snap up what I put in there, not much reaches the bottom.

One thing I've noticed with the black kuhlii that I have in a tank with some panda cories. He's very quick...alot faster at finding and eating the food than the cories. He zips around the tank and will take it right out of the cories mouths. I sometimes worry about them getting enough to eat with him in there, but so far their looking good.

Congrats! I have 6 in my 29 gallon with a male betta and a school of rasbora espei. They are a hoot, out and about at different times, peeking out from under the log, too :)

EMG, I agree, they do have beautiful faces.

Sadly, I lost three out of four and the forth one seems to be on its way out too. :(
When I noticed the first one dead, I went back to the store to see what their policy was. They told me 24 hours but they would make an exception for me, since it had only been about 2 days. I thought that it was nice of them. But as we approached the tank to get a replacement, we saw that the whole lot of them were dead and dying. They quickly refunded me for all four of the loaches, expecting them all to die. Sure enough, when I got home I found another one dead and a couple hours later the third one died. Now, I have to watch the last one suffer. I don't quite know what they are dying of, all I know is that the guy at the LFS told me that this isn't the first time they got a bad batch of Khuli Loaches. He told me that they weren't going to be getting them in for a while. Probably until this problem is worked out with their supplier. I'm so sad.

Beeker, that's too bad. Any other stores near you where you might be able to find some ?

If you do, ask them how long they've been in their tanks before you buy them. If they've had them for at least a week and they look good...they should be ok to buy.

Thanks, EMG. I will definitely do that next time. This is a sad experience, but a good learning experience.
I found the Yoyo Loach on Liveaquaria. Maybe I'll go back to my original plan and get a couple of those. Should 3 be okay? They like to be in groups, right? I'm getting mixed information on the different species profiles.

 I just lost 2 of my Purple Emperor Tetras, my Sparkling Gourami, and one of my Corys because of this. :( My Platys are showing signs of problems too. I've medicated the tank with Salt and Melafix and am planning on changing the water and adding Maracyn 2 soon.

This 20 gallon tank is to be my hospital tank when I change my 75 over to tropical. I guess now is the time to let the population expire and leave it with minimal, inexpensive inhabitants until I get a new home for my Goldfish.

from what i found in the past few years its really hard to find parasite free kuhli loaches
most lfs stocks are destined to death
i find that when lfs do sell them they are sold as "restricted" which means there is no gaurantee on them
heres an article i found not too long ago about kuhli's
" Kuhli loaches are a problem lately in most stores. The stock is just not healthy anymore, and they seem particularly prone to bacterial infections and gill flukes. Stores can treat them with antibiotics, and if lucky, some may survive. Also, if you happen to see the solid black Kuhli loaches for sale, buy them instead. They are (thus far) much hardier, easier to keep, and just as entertaining"

Just an update, I just lost one of my Platys. Whatever is killing my fish must be very powerful, considering that Platys are known to be strong fish.

did u mix the petshops water with your water? maybe the petshops water was contaminated

No, I didn't mix the water. I mixed the fish. That is what the problem is. The Khulis were from a bad stock and contaminated my tank. I took my other 3 Platys out and put them in a 1 gallon hex tank for now. I am hoping they will pull through. My three Corys and two Emperor Tetras I have left are still in the 20 gallon. I don't know what else to do right now.
