I have a serious ich problem. Need help!

Well I finally lost one. I went to feed my fish, and I was looking for my orange guppy. I found him upside down behind one of the decorations, dead. Hopefully the others can tough it out.

Ok. I just did another water change and took new readings. Everything is the same, Nitrites still high (.50). The molly that was very pale is still very pale, and now its hiding in the barrel, which it has hardly ever done... I hope he doesnt die next.

How do I get the nitrites down?

Well, I've got another death. My pleco has died... Could it be too much salt? Although he was looking very bad, 2 fish dieing very quickly is a sign of something? However, the other fish (with the exception of the pale molly) are looking fine as far as sick fish go.

I'm so terribly sorry you lost your pleco... and for all your losses. It's terribly sad to lose them. I don't know for sure what caused his death. Could be the Ich, or the nitrite level, though the salt helps a little with that, and you have been using Prime.

To get your paramaters under control I would do another water change, in fact do multiple water changes to get the ammonia and nitrite down to 0ppm.

What is the salinity in the tank? How much salt are you adding, and what do you think you're percentage is in the tank? As it stands how many teaspoons do you have, total, in your tank, and are you careful to add the proper amount for the number of gallons you take out and replace?

I'm truly sorry for your losses, and for the struggle you're going through.

Are you being careful to not let it creep up?

Right now the ammonia is at 0, but the nitrites are at .50, I've been dosing it with Prime. The salt should be at 16 teaspoons, or pretty close to that. I have buckets with the gallon level marked on it, so I know thats good.

Well... that would be .1% salinity... and the pleco should have been able to tolerate that. I've seen many cases of Ich on this forum, in which that amount of salt was well tolerated in tanks with Plecos. I had Brochis and Otos that did very well with .3%, so I think your Plec should have been OK with that. Sometimes there are losses in cases of Ich.

I think you're doing everything you can... I'm so sorry you've lost that big boy, he was really handsome....

Hang in there... don't give up.... keep us posted.

Did another water change, took some more readings, more of the same...

Ammonia is staying at 0
Nitrite: .50 still
Nitrate: 5

If I do a 50%+ water change will nitrites go down?

Also, my fish are standing their top fins way up. Usually they have them tucked tight to their bodies. Now its almost as if they are displaying them. Is that a good thing, bad thing, or or does it mean nothing?

And one of my mollies is getting more and more spots than shes ever had before on her tail.

This morning the molly that I noticed the ich on first now has probably 100 spots over all its fins. This is the worst I've ever seen it. It also keeps point its head to the surface, tail down, going completely vertical, and just sits there vibrating. Is that a bad sign?

Sorry about your losses. We have a 20g community tank with an angel, albino pleco, 3 cory's, a couple mystery snails, 4 mollies, and a platy. Tank came down with ick and went with the salt and heat treatment, no meds at all, held it for 14 days and all ick gone and it has been 3 months and no return of any ick. Had no losses during treatment.

Your nitrite is puzzling with all of those water changes and your vacuuming all the gunk. Have you tested your water source just to compare. I wonder if your tap water shows any ammonia or nitrite levels. I didn't see if you had already done this.

I'm afraid it doesn't look good for the Molly. I am thinking this may be one of the resistant strains of Ich, I hope not.
