My Marineland heater has been giving me horrendous problems as of late, my poor Oscar has been suffering from scalding 88F to a chilling 70F and I have resorted to putting it on70F and I have chosen to shut off the heater during the day and plug it in at night when it is so cold in the house which is keeping it around 78-80F. I sat down this morning and called Marineland and they told me to ship it back with a note and they would send me a new one. I am a bit aggravated that I have to pay shipping even one way but I get a new heater and that is what really matters. Here is my current issue, how do I heat his tank in the interim? Any ideas? our winter nights have already started with frequent frosts and 35-40F mornings, it gets chilly in my house.

Whats actually wrong with the heater? Over heating? Not working?

When I first noticed it it was too cold so I turned it up from 78F to 80F then I saw it was too hot so I turned it back down one setting at a time everyday until I hit the lowest 70F. The water temp remained about 88F. So initially it was too cool now it won't shut off. The green LED stays on and the water stays too hot if I leave it plugged in.

I am totally put off with Marineland Stealth heaters  with a bunch of differing problems from the outside molding cracking during a water change to temp flucuations. I'm not replacing them with the same crapola.

As far as keeping some of your heat in the tank you can wrap the tank in a blanket such as those moving blankets but I suggest if you are able to--go out and purchase a back-up heater and do so now as it may take weeks to get the new one from Marineland.

How large is your tank???

1 - Buy a new heater, of a different brand, preferably Jager.
2 - Return the Marineland heater for replacement.
3 - Keep the replacement for a backup.

It is a 56gal column style (yes I know too small for an oscar don't start, he is getting a bigger tank for x-mas)
I can't afford a new one right now or I would already have bought one. It'll be 2 weeks till I get payed again.

Call Marineland back, explain the situation and offer them your credit card number as a hold against the new heater. If they don't get the old one back within XX days, they can charge you for it. Most companies will work with you like that. Based on my past dealings with them, I'd expect them to be reasonable due to your situation.

I have a 200w Stealth that's collecting dust. After reading so many horror stories at many forums, I didn't want to take a chance.

I bought a Hydor ETH in-line heater and it's been perfect. I also have a Jager that I bought in 1991 or so and it's been working perfectly.
