I need help choosing a dog breed!

MG. you are bad! LOL

A rescue dog would be such a nice thing to do for a poor lonely dog and they most always make wonderufl pets. Is there a weight limit in the apt rules?

Basenji, they are very clean and non-bark dogs. But personally I like shiba inus better.

do your research and then go to the animal shelter and see what you fall in love with there that fits within your requirements. the people at the shelter should be able to tell you about the dog's habits and character. as far as peeing on stuff and barking loudly - that's your job to train him/her. a dog that isn't trained and given rules will soon do whatever it wants to do.

even if you are set on a certain kind of dog, there any many breed-specific rescue groups, and you should check those out first. those people know their dogs extremely well, and make it their job to fit their dogs with exactly the right person and home.

A schipperke would be a decent choice I think. Corgies could work too, but they do have some crazy fur so that might be an issue with grooming, not the most low-maintenance, esp if you live someplace where it gets hot in the suimmer.

I agree with trying to get a rescue dog, there are so many dogs that need homes out there. And, coming from a family full of dog lovers/owners, mixed breeds tend to be the most loving, well behaved, easily adjustable, most intelligent dogs out there. Relatives of mine have owned everything from chihuahuas to maltese to labs to golden retrievers to german shepherds etc. - and every single one will tell you their favorite dog is one of the mixed breeds they have had. Of course there are breed-specific rescues for purebred dogs as well.

Further, as wchicken said above, any dog that is not trained properly WILL pee on stuff and most likely will bark alot as well (unless you get a basenji) and jump all over people, and generally not be a "good dog". Another advantage to getting a dog from a shelter - many of them are already house trained, I have owned three dogs and not once have I ever had to go through the dreaded house breaking process! When you get an 8 week old puppy from a breeder, be prepared to have to let the pup out every 3-4 hours, including during the night, for them to relieve themselves - at that age they can't hold it for long.

And whatever you decide to do....DO NOT buy a puppy from a pet store. Good luck finding the right dog for you!
