I need help choosing a dog breed!

I never would have thought a chihuahua to be a dog that does not bark loudly. Those things are noisy all the time. You may want to look at a dachshund, yorkie, or some other small dog. Maybe even a toy poodle. They don't even shed, but do require grooming.

I used to breed Huskies and currently have a male double registered solid white Husky. I know a bit about them. They are not for beginners, but are not difficult dogs to keep. I would not recommend them for apartment living though. They enjoy spending most of their time outdoors and are uncomfortable in doors. They do enjoy coming inside to visit or spend the night, but that's about it.
They also still have a lot of that "wild" instinct in them because comparatively they have not been domesticated that long. They LOVE to roam. I used to keep one in a pen. When I let her out to run, she would disappear for hours. When she got the roaming out of her system, she would come back and happily go back into her pen.

Both highly intelligent and highly active dogs. VERY poor choices for apartment living.
I missed the apt. part. You are right.

How about a Pomeranian?
This is Emmy. She weighs in at a whopping 3 1/2 pounds. She doesn't bark alot and as long as you keep her brushed she doesn't shed alot. She has very little grooming. Just around her privates. She has been a wonderful addition to our family. She is very loving and she was very easy to train.(I know every dog is different):)

You lucked out with that one, I think every other Pomeranian in existence barks like there's no tomorrow.

that and every pomeranian i've ever seen has had halitosis comparable to a pug.

cute... but the barking and smelly turns them off to me.

Yorkies, I have one myself. Everything is great about them except for the part that they kinda bark alot, but other then that, they are great, THE dog for me.

I used to own a kennel and have had every kind of dog imaginable at one time or another and hands down, the Toy Poodle is the smartest and does not shed. When I first started out you couldn't run fast enough to give me a poodle, now it is the only dog I will ever own. They aren't hard to groom yourself either, just takes a bit of practice. I had much rather groom a poodle than any other long haired dog.

As long as you give it a little exercise daily, a bassett hound is a pretty undemanding dog. Short hair, sleeps alot...the only issue is that you have to give inside their ears a thorough cleaning every so often.

They don't bark much, but when they do, it's a low, deep bark...they sound like a dog 10x their size...not like a yippy little lapdog.

Oh no! I guess I did get lucky. I bathe my Emmy once a week. I've never noticed a bad smell unless she's been outside alot. She barks when someone knocks on the door or when there is noise outside. I guess that is the good thing about living in the country.

I LOVE my corgis but boy do they shed! They have a double coat and shed like crazy. But they are a big dog on a small/mid size body - they even have a big dog bark - but only if they need to. They get to 25 - 30 pounds tho depending on the sex and genetics...... I have owned pembroke welsh corgis for over 18 years and will never have another breed!
