i bought two neon tetras and i need to know how to distinguish their sexes. Has anyone ever successfully bred neon tetras and if so could you tell me what all you did? thx in advance

I put them in the tank and shut my eyes . the next thing i new 100 and 100 of them ! ! !
i couldnt tell male from female :dive2:

The females are more round than males. They breed better in softer, acidic water. That's about all I know, good luck!

Neons are hardly ever bred in home aquaria. Need water with low (5.5) pH and almost "0" hardness. Then the eggs need total darkness. That's the easy part. Getting the tiny fry to eat is very difficult.

that makes neons sound like some basement experiment... very rare event, absolute darkness, fragile outcome

ITS ALIVE!!!! BWAHAHAHAHA

but seriously, neons come from the amazon river, in sections where the tannin from wood causes the water to be VERY murkey and still, they use their bright colors so they can see each other in the dark water, as they are visual fish, they also predate on TINY creatures... try to recreate the natural habitat, and you will probably have more luck!

Question on neon tetra's

I have bought 10 neon tetra's I have a 90 gal tank with 5 female guppies, and 3 male, I also have two small pleco, I hear that pleco will eat any egg laying fishes eggs. So I removed to tetra's female (that look like full of eggs) to my 30 gal holding tank for new guppies yet to be born. So for now I thought I would experiment and leave two females and one male tetra in the 30 gallon dark, and with caves for them. My question is!

Where do tetra lay their eggs, is it in the gravel or on rooftops of caves?
How many eggs do they typically lay?
Also I was wondering if I am correct in thinking, that the newly hatched tetra will do well with the new arrivals of baby guppies? I plan to put in there with the teta, when born. Any knowledge and or first hand experience would be greatly appreciated. I do plan in time when and if I do get tetra babies to hatch, to remove the parents, and put them back in the 90 gal tank with the older guppies and pleco.
By the way I also got one ghost shrimp, that was accidenlty put in the bag with the tetra from the store lol. NO CHARGE, they didn't notice, I didn't either until I got home lol.

Oh and another thing, I live in the country so my water is med to hard....that will present a problem with my tetra's eggs hatching, but you can buy ph up and ph down for those that don't know already, unfortunately still not good if your water is hard, but giving it a shot anyway!

Lovely site you have here!

Ok, so I don't know anything about breeding tetras at all, but there are a couple things I noticed it what mtiller and judith said..

mtiller... you said you bought two neon tetras? Do you have more of them in your already established tank, or are those all you have? Because if those are all you have, you need to get about 4-6 more, at least. They're schooling fish and thrive better in large groups. How big is your tank?

Judith... they do make chemicals to raise or lower the ph in tanks, but the stress caused by these chemicals is MUCH worse than having an undesired ph for that breed of fish...
