I have a 10 gallon w/ 2 40 watt cf's, I'm starting to notice some algea growing on everything, like you all said would happen. Do they make 20 watt cf's? I'd just take one out but then half my tank is dark. Any other lighting ideas using a 2 bulb hood?

Also... I'm gunna be using excel soon, will that help at all?

No problem, just go online and google "Compact Fluroescent Bulbs", and you'll get millions of answers. Just get a few CF bulbs that are in the 5000K-10000K range, and have each bulb be around 15 or so watts. This will put you at 30 watts. With excel dosing, and you may want to think about some ferts, and that light, you should be fine.

Good Luck!

are you running CO2 at all? If not, and you have all of that light, you are cultivating a nice algae tank.
Excel will help of course!! You must have a carbon source with that amount of light!

Are you talking about screw-in cf ? If so, they sell 2x20w 6500k CF at Walstarmart for $8, I think. Light bulb section. Also avlb 25w for about $5 each. These are straight (better), not spriral bulbs. Lights of America brand. I've heard Lowes or Home Depot have it but I've never been able to find them there.

ok I'm slightly confused here... I got GE's cf "daylight 40". They run on 10 watts... but are "equivalent to the lighting of a 40 watt bulb." So are these the right bulbs? That would then put me at 2 wpg.

equivalent to the 40w incandescent bulb. you only count each bulb as the 10 watts it uses though.
