I Want A Cool Fish.

I had a oscar but i gave it to a friend with a lager tank because i was told a 55 was too small

Look up the snakefish/ropefish
ReedFish (RopeFish, SnakeFish) - Erpetoichthys calabaricus
they are really cool, I'd love to have one and will get one once I get my tank!!! I don't know if they would work with the eel, knife fish or other you were looking at but I do know they are peaceful and if they would work with them they would look really awsome (IMO). I don't know how they add the links to these posts or I'd add one (I tried but it didn't highlight to click on? But just check them out I bet you would like them!

Well tell me what will fit
Well, what do you want? Aggressive fish? Just one or 2 big fishes or a community style tank? Do you want to try plants? seriously, I get ooohs and ahs when people come over to my place. If you have the money and you seriously want to impress people and you have the time and patients, try a reef tank. That will impress everyone.

Racer,

The trick with the oddballs mentioned is to do your own research to find the smaller species of each. And you should do this yourself, because you need to be able to iid them at the dealer regardless of what the tank says. Far too many lfs don't accurately label their tanks. From his pics it's obvious spartan knows his bichirs, take his recommendations and familiarize yourself with the ones you want as well as those that are too large so you can tell the difference at the dealer. Same with the knife fish. An african knife or some of the small SA species will be fine. If you get a clown knife (unfortunately the most common) you'll have a tankbuster that belongs in some of the largest tanks you'll find on this site. The african butterfly is fine as size goes but brings up another hurtle. If your going for oddballs, be prepared for potentially feeding each one specifically. In many cases you won't be able to toss in a few pellets or flakes and expect everyone to be nourished. My butterfly will eat flakes but after a while ignores them. Worms are relished but have to be dangled at the surface for him to get them. Of course his favorite is his natural food, so I treat him with baby crickets occasionally.

If you can't or won't do your own research then at least find a store that specializes. In a city the size of Houston I'm sure you can find one. The lead spartan gave you is likely priceless in this regard. If you depend on the chain stores your bound to lose in the oddball search, leave the chain stores to hardware only.
Careful on what you buy. These fish would be to much for your 55. Do some research first before you buy. A 55 is not that big of a tank when it comes to most of these fish being listed.
I don't want to start an argument, but a Senegal bichir, african knife, and african butterfly fish will fit in a 55, especially if that's all that will be going into the tank.

The African knife, Xenomystus nigri, only grows to 8 inches. Its min tank size is a tank 3' x 1'.

Senegal bichirs, Polypterus Senegalus, grows to a foot and can be kept in a 55.

The African Butterfly fish, Pantodon buchholzi, only grows to 4 inches and could be kept in a 10 gallon.

Well Thanks for everything.
I started reading up on lots of things last night.
Because i dont wanna get a fish that would grow too big.
So i got a lot to research.

african lungfish NO
electric catfish will work I had a 10 inch one in a 55 who was very happy with his surroundings and tank size and he was very fumnto watch. I trained him to lay in the palm of my hand without shocking me, and to swim through rings I made with my fingers (sometimes I gently griped him to remember where he gets his n :soda: :D  :D :soda: :soda: :D ) to be handfeed. My friends and family enjoyed handfeeding him to (I made sure they had sterle hands with no soap) I had him with A 5" blue crayfish and there was a constant territory stuggle. the synodontis lost aginst him and reseave a few scraches but the electric cat was markless and released a bit of his specialty and sent the cray to his would cave. both have passed away: catfish- melafix (I even wateredit down and added only a bit every hour :hang: :help:  ) Blue cray- brother moved in and was to lazy to set up his african tank and dumped them inwithout me knowing and a 5" blue zebra got him
a 4-6" lare manegunse would do the trick, and it will need a larger tank as it grows but racer has one.
1-2 frontosas would be alright. they look great and are quit peacful.
lima shovelnose only grow to a foot amd would work.
small lungs would work but i think they grow to quickly and are $75 and up so nevermind
