I had 4 Jack Dempsey's originally, but 3 were female and 1 is a male. They were originally all in a 37G tank from the start, but eventually the male picked one female as his mate and they beat up the other 2 females. I took those two and put them in a 10G tank, but the smaller of the two died about a week later because the larger of the two decided that it wanted all of the tank to itself. The second female died only about a week ago, after living in that tank for over 4 years on its own. The breeding pair are still alive and seemingly well, although the male still beats on his female partner sometimes.
The breeding pair did breed, many times in fact. The heater was recently turned down on their tank so they would no longer breed, because all they would do was consume their offspring. Jack Dempsey's can be very interesting fish, but mine didn't seem to get along. Proceed with caution if keeping multiple ones in a single tank.
