Thanks, are mantis shrimp a bad thing in most tanks? I thought that I had read somewhere that they are not really tank friendly. May have been something different though. Things can get confusing listening to others sometimes.

i wouldnt consider them nasty critters. and i have one.
theres a lot of BS out there about them.

sorry, I guess it's a personal opinion thing too though. Only nasty if you consider the potential for having your fingers pounded and/or sliced a bad thing. 
I know, I would also consider most, if not all, snakes "nasty critters" but that too would be a personal opinion. I do think the mantis shrimp are pretty, just don't want one for myself.

i just KNOW theres a whole lotta critters that you can get/introduce to your system that will be FAR more detramental than a mantis.

an assessor would look cool but unfornately they are more of a cave fish so they'd pick an overhang and hang there most of the time. of the ones bob posted i'd go for the purple firefish or court jester(although iirc, court jesters tend to bury themselves in sand, perfectly within reach of bane) i've seen zebra bar dartfish in person and have been less than impressed, however my first pick would be a peaceful damsel, either a YTBD(although mine was agressive towards new comers for a short period of time) a talbot damsel(supposed to be the most peaceful) or a couple orange stripe chormis(i've got one, had a pair but one jumped, quite peaceful)

I don't remember what size your tank is, but I just added a scissortail dartfish to my 55. that thing is freakin lightning fast, took me about 15 min to catch it in a 10gal QT tank because I couldn't keep up with it. And, it gets along well with my firefish, so its friendly. Hangs out mostly upper to mid-levels, and behaves pretty much like the firefish, except the firefish is usually toward the bottom and the dartfish is usually up more in the open water.
I think the zebra dartfish would be really cool. We have some at the store I work at and they are really nice looking... I'm sure that they would look even better once they grow accustomed to a tank rather than being in a LFS tank.
