I will never understand people

Today my wife and I were doing some odd jobs around the house that needed to be done and the whole time the dog was trying to "help" us.

He had us laughing so hard at times our sides hurt! Just thinking about how much of a clown he is got me to wondering about his prior owners.

The paperwork I got from a rescue group said "abused and neglected." He was removed from the home and wound up at a shelter and then eventually to us. Evidentially the case was one where you sign the dog over or get charged and go to court. Breed-wise we have no idea exactly what he is other than a clown. He is not a chewer, cat-hater, not a finicky eater and is house-broken.

I have some understanding if a person got a difficult dog and was in over their head which doesn't excuse neglect or abuse. But I would understand rehoming. We have had him long enough to know whether or not he has behavioral issues. We have only to tell him he is a "bad dog" and he puts himself into timeout in the bathroom (not something we taught him). When he feels ready he comes back out and all is well with his world.

I know nobody has the answers as to why people mistreat animals, but it sure makes me wonder about who is the intelligent species.

That's a sweet story. Thanks for sharing.

Niceness aside, I do believe that there is a special spot in the underworld for people who abuse dogs.

Wow, that was a very beautiful story. I'm so happy to know that your dog was able to find you and your wife = great owners; something that many stray/abandoned dogs are not able to do before they are euthanized or killed. :(

There's a saying that is often echoed through generations in my family and it's that dogs are better than human beings. Dogs do not abandon their children (something some humans do) and dogs are loyal (something a few humans lack).

Lastly, to quote our great American poet Emily Dickinson, "Dogs are better than human beings because they know but do not tell." ;)

What a sweet story. It reminds me a lot of my dog.

I got her from the shelter about 7 years ago. Even while in her cage she was still the happiest dog on Earth. She had been there for a long time and I'm surprised she hadn't been put down. She was picked up as a stray but since she was housebroken, I'm guessing she was abandoned. She has been the best dog I have ever had and I cannot understand how someone could just give her up when she was only 10 months old. I'm also surprised she stayed in the pound so long. She was housebroken, good with cats, loves kids, is great with other dogs and will even ask for belly rubs from the mailman and she loves the vet.
Nothing ever gets her down and she's been my pal ever since. She's helped me through a lot of tough times and always makes me laugh. I just don't get how someone could abandon such a wonderful and happy spirit. I'm so thankful she's in our life now.

Thats such a sweet story, just like my cat Stripes. Im glad your dog found u. People mistreat animals to make themselves feel strong.

that's such a sweet story! We have a 5 year old shepherd/husky mix that we got as a tiny little puppy. A few neighborhood kids were carting the whole litter around in a wheelbarrow, going from door to door trying to give them away. Our Sheila was the littlest, runtiest weakest one, so infected with worms she couldn't even walk across the floor! Turns out she's the gentlest, most sweet natured dog I've ever had (except when it comes to sparrows-she'll eat 'em).

I used to donate stuff to our local animal shelter and going there used to break my heart...there were some really GOOD dogs there. Wish I had the time and space to adopt another one.
