Ideas for a 50gal

Why not look at just rainbow fish? here are some beautiful ones out there. They really make a stunning planed tank and are very active. The bosemanis and te red ones (I forgot the name). Look on you tube for "rainbow fish aquariums" Very pretty and unique.

thanks, aren't the red ones just called red rainbow fish or Glossolepis incisus? But that still doesn't answer my question about which color sand to use. Thanks for the comment anyway =)

What color background are u gonna use? I think Black looks great with planted tanks and colorful fish! The choice of sand color is personal. I use an off white pool filter sand. It is cheap and easy to get. I love the look of the black though. I am thinking of using it for a Lake Tang tank I am working on. I used to only use eco complete. I must admit my plants do not do quite as well with the sand. It is a little more work. But looks really nice and easy to clean.

What color sand should i use? black or white? The fish I think (might not get the bosemani rainbow fish) are going to be 5-6 bosemani rainbowfish, 9 rummy nose tetra and 6 peppered cories. Most of the plants I am using are going to be green. I have t5 lighting forgot how much watts but one light is white and the other is purple.
I like black, because I think things tend to stand out against it better. miscalculation has led me to have orange and black fluorite, and I'm not terribly happy, but it could be worse. Fortunately, I guess, I'm one of the 17 Bengals fans not from Ohio.

Bosemani rainbows are stunning, but they can be notorious jumpers. and planted tanks tend to be open topped as a lots of lights warm up the water. so pls plan ahead. IMO rummynoses are best introduced after the tank has settled down, maybe after about 3 months. they are very sensitive to water parameters

you would want some kind algae eaters: true SAEs are good but might grow into gluttons...otocinclus probably is the best

pls read up on the lights, substrate, CO2, fertilizers, etc. before you start

I have owned other fish tanks before(2 15 gal freshwater tanks) so I have got the equipment covered this thread was mainly about how to make the tank look nice. I am interested in otos but can't find any of them around so I think a bn pleco or 2 could work for me :grinno:

Hey guys what do you guys think of not getting the peppered cory cats and instead getting some albino cory cats? I hear that the albinos are smaller and if they are i would love to have another school or maybe 6 lemons or seprae tetra?

I have threadfin and praecox rainbows in my 46 planted that has black gravel and black background. I have to say somehow the blue on the praecox doesn't seem to match the green and black, but I am really fussy about colors. The praecox are very, very active. I'd figure out the colors of your fish before deciding on tank colors. For otos, I just got 6 from Rachel here, MsJinx. (can't remember her actual ID name) Oops, I see you are in NZ so I guess you can't buy fish from here to be shipped. I do like the idea of lemon serpaes, the yellows with the black would be stunning, I had considered that myself.

Both lemon tetras and serpae tetras I think would be quite stunning. I know the serpaes can be nippers. I never had that experience but I know others have. I don't think the albinos are any smaller...they would look nice on black sand though :grinyes:
So, were you thinking the lemons and serpaes instead of the rainbows?
I have never been a fan of rummynose...so if it were me I would do a school of lemons, a school of serpaes and a school of black phantoms which I think are gorgeous. Then your cories. You could actually do some albino and some julis.

That is if you are not doing the rainbows..

when i was planning this tank in the beginning I wanted the rainbows the be then main fish of the tank and the schoolers just to be background fish. So if i was to go without the rainbows i would need an other main fish for the tank because i don't want this tank just to be a bunch of small schoolers.
