Ideas for a noob (55 g tank)

alright guys i took your advice on signign upon the forums, the forums look great! and plenty of info to get my aquarium started! Now I noticed someone posted a noobs fishprofile.com FAQ but im still pretty curious, how long does a cycle take? and do i go to the pet store to buy a cycle kit?

Yes, your LFS will have test kits. Get a liquid one, not test strips. The AP Master is excellent. If you have a big box near you, PET CO, PetSmart..etc, check their online price...usually much lower than in store and most the time the store will match it.

Why a Dwarf Puffer in a 55? they are about a big as a dime and there are so many other things you can put in a 55 Gallon tank. Why not get a couple of the larger puffer species? BTW Dwarf Puffers are not community fish.

im trying to have a freshwater tank, that is why, ive researched that DPs are freshwater, and plus other puffers are more aggresive apparently

if not the DP, can you guys reccomend some other puffers that are small and freshwater?

oh and what is LFS..i know its a pet store but the does the acronym stand for?

i dont know why you need to have puffers, because most if not all are quite agressive, and many of them need to be transitioned to brackish or full marine water by the time they are adults.
i adree with rbishop. you should probably get three angels, and then there are way more fish you could put with them.
you could have some larger tetras, like black skirts, lemons, black phantoms and red phantoms, bleeding heart, diamond, and if you can find them, congo.
the vast assortment of corydoras also go well with angels, as do rams and dwarf gouramis.

WARNING: if you decide to get a trio of angels, stay away from small fish such as zebra danios, neons, cardinals, rummynoses, guppies, etc. and notorious fin nippers such as tiger barbs and searpe tetras. also, i have found that the bigger gouramis such as the opalines and the like can clash with angels.

i want my puffers to befriend these! hopefully haha

any suggestions on friends for these blue fellers?

the cichs will kill the puffer.......easy as that. DP's can only be kept in a species ONLY tank, or with Otto's. That is it. Cich's are aggressive fish (mostly) and would do best with other cich's. No plants in your tanks, it will be a waste of money for you as the cich's will tear them up. Also, cich's require a slightly higher ph (I think around 7.8 but I could be wrong or its the other way around but i cant remember). They also need a sand substrate. I would suggest you read up a bit on them, and find their specific needs. You can have a beautiful tank of cichs, but most people that have them have them in a species only tank as well. Good luck.
