Identify this fish?

maybe alligator gar. those get HUGE. like big enough to eat alligators (i.e name)

LOL, alligator gars get their name because their mouths are shaped like an alligator's mouth not because they get big enough to eat them.

The biggest one I've caught was 7-8' long and 16" or so across while trawling for shrimp.
 
lol 12 volt man. Fishing for gar is complicated you need to rig like a lasso with the bait in the middle that will close down around the nose. It is a weird looking rig but I hear it works good.
you can go for gar on hook and line but you need to use extremely heavy tackle even for small fish because you need to set the hook EXTREMELY hard.
 
They infest almost every lake and stream down here. People call them pickeral here, don't know if there's a difference, don't really pay much attention to local pest fish.

Esox spp. are very different from Gar. No relation whatsoever.

i go fishing for these all the time, they get big like 40 pounds big, and they smell and there slimmy, they are a gar pike
i live in michigan

Yeow - I swim (or should I say "used to swim") in Lake Michigan. Maybe not so much anymore :eek3:
