If I wanted to paint the inside of my tank

You will get a slightly glossy effect when you paint the outside because of the light reflecting off the glass. I have never heard that about silicon and oil based paints. Most paints used in boat building are oil based and they frequently use silicon together. I don't think it is possible to get rid of the reflecting aspect unless you get a completely different aquarium and use glass with a non-reflecting coat. I personally do not like painting the insides of a tank because, no matter how careful you are, you will sooner or later scratch the paint which will create a surface for algae to grow on. It seems to me that if you want white you are looking for something to stay clean looking or to give depth so streaks of algae are probably not what you are looking for.

If you can't/don't want to use paint have you considered some kind of white insert? Perhaps very thin white acrylic? or a piece of vinyl?

the photography of that tank may be having an effect on the matte look... if it is back lit or has a lot of light coming in from the sides it may not show reflection...

if algae does grow on the paint I think it would be near impossible to remove without damaging the paint.

That being said, I want to know how it turns out so I vote for DO IT!

i'll be painting the outside of one of my many experimental 5 gallons in a short while, just to see how it looks. maybe paint some panels on the inside. pics will follow.

ok new plan.

if i wanted to use panels that i can paint without painting the tank directly, what kind of material would i be looking for? price is the name of the game. i was thinking about buying a sheet of light diffuser or even go with report covers.

Anyone ever used Car window tint on the outside as a background?

whoa there buddy... retract those claws

I think report covers would work, not sure what you mean by light diffuser... I think inserts would be nice because they can be removed to be cleaned. I think the challenge would be getting to snug against the back of the tank, maybe velcro?

what about putting a coat of black 100% silicon caulk on the back and side panes?
