If you had the choice

I would create one massive tank in my living room that wrapped around the outside of the room leaving openings for doors of course. Essentially creating a slow moving river in my house. It would be inset into the wall itself with drop down cabinitry and all the equipment ould be on the other side behind the tank, where id have a small hallway behind to do maintanance. It would be like a secret hall thing like in a mansion that youd only know it was there if you knew better. It would probably re-create a african river.

Very nice idea tbone!!

You are right concrete is porous. As for the sealent I used fiberglass then glued black perspex to all surfaces because I didnt want that grey blue look that finished fiberglass had.

Mine is concrete and covered with some "safe" fiberglass resin and mat. My glass is sealed with excessive amounts of aquarium sealant inside and I used a super duty sealant called sika flex on the edge of the glass outside where it meets the concrete.

I forgot to add that my next tank will be in the wall between the living room/dining room/kitchen (undecided, but a room divider anyway). I will probably go 1000+ gallons, I want it big not impossible to keep clean/catch sick fish. I saw the most beautiful tank the other day, it had one of the heads from Easter island in the center hiding most of the equipment. WAAYYY too cool!

I am deffinately going to have to get you some build pics racinjason. So you can see the mistakes I made. As for equipment nothing can be see in my tank only the outlets for the water.

Yeah! Let's see em! I used the caves in my tank to hide everything, there is absolutely no equipment visable in the tank because I love the natural look.

There comming...... How did you make the caves, some pics on that would be good. I love the natural look ,but when little fish get big it looks unnatural.

Mine are made of bricks, they are stacked up into several cave shapes and covered with cement to make them look like the rest of the tank. One is from top to bottom of the tank totally open on the side, it is approx 3'x1'x.5'. The second is top to bottom also and has a 10"x6" opening at the bottom for the fish to go in, there is a 8" opening on top to look down in, it also has a cave within the cave approx 12" square. The other caves are small and just have a top opening. One is 18"x6" and the other is very small, just intended for fry to hide in. I don't consider the last a "cave" since it is just a few small holes. The african cichlids I had LOVED those caves and used them all the time, the discus rarely venture in them except for one heckel who loves the smallest of the 3 caves. So the snails and asst catfish have used the caves for breeding. I now have LOADS of bristlenose and applesnails.

You need to go with the mega-tanks every time.

If I could splurge, I'd like a 500 gallon tank with a height not exceeding 18 inches.

Make that several 500 gallon tanks, connected with a waterway of clear polycarbonate. You could breed guppies in one tank and if they dare travel into the tube come out into the Red Devil tank.

I'd love to have a huge tank in the center of my house (when I have a house) dividing all the rooms like sometimes people have with a chimney...I'd also like a HUGE one built out of fiberglass or something on the foundation in the basement with an entry room upstairs for maintenance...But these are probably pipe-dreams
