I'm angry - Lumpy's story

nice pics- they arn't bad at all- and the betta- or rather lumpy- is very pretty- great pic for choseing the closest one to death!

Thanks :) I guess it was my way of doing the right thing. I mean he's mostly white with a tiny bit of blue - not a lot of colour but so far he's got personality. He's definitly got a temper :)

Now quick question about this betta or any betta. He's in the basement by the computer area. My basement tends to hover anywhere from 65F to 72F. Is that way too low for him? I have heard that bettas can tolerate cooler water than most other tropicals. Will he be ok as long as the water quality and rest of the parameters are good?

it will die if it stays at 65 for too long- they prefer 76-83 degrees (depending on the source of information)

the water quality should help, but i'd get a mini heater or cover the bowl with a blanket when the temperature drops (like at night) and it should help the temperature remain stable (if the temp stays around 72 it should be fine)

Higher water temperatures are best for bettas. You'll see brighter colors and personality in the 74-76 range.

I'll see what I can arrange for a heater. Maybe on the weekend I can pick up a 5 gallon or 2.5 gallon tank and use my 50W heater on its lowest setting and watch the temps. For now I'll take the betta and his home upstairs. Its about 69F right now in his water. Upstairs it will be around 73F.

Lumpy is very pretty. If you think he has personality now, just wait until you put him in a bigger tank. My betta really blossomed when he moved from a little vase to a big tank. Good luck!

On a very close tangent.

I was hanging out at a boardwalk this weekend, when I noticed a woman carrying two bettas in little cups and one of those tiny 1 gallon plastic "tanks". Then I noticed someone else w/ a betta in a little cup, and then another.

You probably guessed it by now; there were games handing out bettas as prizes, stacked all over the booth. No more regard to the fish than to a stuffed animal. :mad2:

Now thats even more crazy - handing out fish to people who may not even want one or dont know how to care for one. Dead fishy for sure. People can be the stupidest creatures on earth I tell you. Dumber than a single celled organism! Makes me super angry.

I agree with you Scotto.
It's in these 3 x 3 inch plastic bags the bettas are in when I get them home.
These poor guys would drool over these plastic cups if they get to see one !!
I wonder how often would the guys at LFS care to open those plastic bags to either feed them or do a water change. I dont think they ever do it. Those guys are just waiting to be sold - real badly.

I was at Petco a few days ago and a woman was wanting to buy a bunch of gold fish and little vases. The manager asked what they were for. The woman was getting them for some kind of game for a club activity. The manager refused to sell her anything. Sometimes Petco does something right.
