I know somewhat how to tell the difference between males and females while venting, but how do you know for sure? Any pictures I have seen, even showing males and females side by side (not dempseys, but other cichlid species), look pretty much the same.

Depends how big your fish is. If too young, it is hard to tell. most Male usually have longer and pointer dorsal fin than female. Most male is larger when fully grown. Some male cichlids develop hump as they get older. Some cichlids, male has better or brighter coloration. However, Red Terror female has better coloration than male...I heard and saw.

I'm not saying all Cichlids are like that...to tell differences by their dorsal fin, hump development, color/pattern, and etc. It really all depends on what species.

Sexing JD is easier than sexing Oscar :) Again, depends on how big your JD is.

Thanks for the info, but I was asking what exactly to look for when venting it. The dempsey is almost 7 inches, but its confusing to tell the sex of it because it has spots/splotches on the whole gill plate, but it seems to have fins that could go either way. It also seems to be colored more like a female.

And reply to my last email please. :)

Just want to know the sex for the sake of knowing. When did you send the email? I havent seen any from you for a while, unless you mean one youve sent within the last 2 hours or so, but hotmail wont let me into it right now.

When in doubt google. This took me .15 seconds to find, according to google at least. venting

Thanks, Ive already seen that page though. It still seems to be hard though to tell the difference. Well actually on those examples the difference is pretty obvious.
