I'm New (I have questions too!)

Hi again Dragon. You are planning ahead and that's good. Your fish will thank you. Excellent!!!

About the luner system, it's more to allow you see your fish at night, and mine seem to ignore the blue lights in the night, -They will behave exactly as in a dark tank. However, this is an optional device and, in my humble oponion, should be considered after the tank is completely set up and runnig smoothly.

I see you are looking for big fishes (yeah!) so you should be considering a bigger tank. A 55 is good for one bichir, but if you consider adding more big fish, you'll need a bigger tank. Also, as you stated before, you will be adding hiding spots and vegetation: it will also compete for the avaiable space. Big fish are normally messy and will be moving things that are in the middle. This will be not noticeable when young, but a 12" fish is quite strong.

Also, remember you have to add a filter and heater to your tank. Bichirs are carnivourous and add more waste to the tank than "normal" fish, so you'll surely need a good quality filter rated for a larger tank than the one you will use.

These are just some recomendations. If you can afford a bigger tank, maybe something around 80 would fit you better.

Good luck and sorry if I sound paranoid. I'm just a plenty-of-room freak. :)

Well, here is my problem...the room I'll be moving into is decent sized. A 55 Gallon is really all that I'll have the room for, considering I'm moving into a nice condo. I thought that all 3 of those fish (and whatever else I've decided to get) would do good in a 55G tank. I really really want the Bichir, but I don't want it to be the only fish in this huge 55G. Can you please help me figure out what I should do to keep the 55G in mind, and get more fish. You seem to really know what you're talking about. If you say bigger, I suppose that it's probably the best for my future fish then. I really need the help if you really think I need to go bigger for those fish I've selected. I really want a good enviornemt for my fish, and I've got it set in my mind that I AM going to get a big aquarium. It just may take me a big longer to save up for a 80 Gallon. I'm limiting myself to $210 for the tank. I've seen 55G tanks a my LFS for $111, so I think I can just make the cut for the 80G tank...hopefully.
I understand now about the lunar lights, and thank you for the information. And I already figured that I would need special types of filters, heaters, ect. but I'm going to wait till I get the tank first.
Right now...I really need the help in selecting the right fish. I would greatly appreciate it if you could help me.
Thank you so much Patoloco, you've been a great help to me.

PS...In the mean time, sometime this week I am going back to my LFS with the good priced tanks and get the measurements and price of a 80G tank. I need to know if it'll fit in my room & if it'll break my bank. If its under $200 at this place, I'll let you know more. I still then could use your help if you could please continue to help me.

PATOLOCO! Is there any other way I could contact you? Do you have any kind of instant messaging system?

I've come up with more questions. Thank you so much for your help again, you have no clue how much I appreciate your help.
1) Exactly. What is THE SMALLEST species of Bichir out there. I've ran into many sites saying it was the Senegal Bichir, BUT I've ran into many sites, abot the same Bichir, that claims is max size is 12" (on some sites) and 19" (on other sites) and to be honest. I have no clue which site to believe.
2) If the Senegal Bichir turns out NOT to be the smallest. Where could I purchase the smallest type? At my LFS & Petsmart, they only carry the Senegal Bichir.
3) Could somebody direct me to a Fish site that has the most accurate information about different types of fish? Or would I be best of here on the aquaria central species profiles?

Thank you so much, and I'm so sorry about all of these question. I can understand if it is becoming overwhelming. :help:

I posted a species and size list. While fishbase.org lists a P.senegalus as reaching 19 inches in the wild of the thousands of keepers I have talked to all agree 10-12 inches in home aquaria is the maximum size (fishbase while good has mistakes)

Where could I purchase the smallest type?Senegals are among the smallest and the cheapest as they are farm raised (see list page 2 this post) other small species go up in price dramaticly

I use the species profile on this site for a lot of my information but I also crossreference it with books and other sites-Anne

I would go with a 75 over an 80. Gallons aren't as important as surface area. A 75 is wider than an 80.

A 75 would be better then? Oh wow, I never thought about surface area over gallons. Thank you for that tip, that'll even save me in the bank as well as size for where I could place it.
Thanks again!

Shane,

I had another question that I posted before that never got answered. When my tank gets completely set up, and everythings running smoothly for a while, should I add the tankmates of the Bichir first? Or the Bichir itself first? Or does it really make no difference? I just thought that it might be a factor in having the Bichir accept the tankmates more.
Thank you.

Shane, :hang:

Could somebody also assist me in finding a Pleco that will go well with both a Senegal Bichir (12") and a Striped Peacock Eel (12") in a 75G tank? I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you for your help!

Shane, :D
