I'm NEW, saying hey hey hey

I am new from 2 mins ago my brother also has a account and said this is a cool website.

I've been reading your posts. Sorry about your big loss on the 40 gallon. I see you have had lots of other trouble as well. I'll probably get flammed for this but here is my 2 cents of advice.

I did not have fish growing up. I don't have any close friends that have fish. I have never really been exposed to this hobby much in my entire life. My kids showed some interest in wanting an aquarium so I decided I would look into it and see what kind of commitment I was in for. That was the beginning of August. I bought a book about freshwater fish.

Specifically -

Then I bought an aquarium from craigslist and joined these forums. I started asking questions before I even put water into the tank.

Then I bought another book -

Then I looked up a freshwater fish compatibility chart on the internet. -

Freshwater Fish Compatibility Chart

Based on the advice I received on these forums and the compatibility chart I started to write down list of what fish I wanted that were compatible and what quantities of each were suggested. Then I went to www.aqadvisor.com (as suggested by wespastor) and plugged in my tank setup and stocking ideas to find out if I was on the right track. I made the needed adjustments to my plan to get a setup that worked well for my tank and conditions.

But then.......................... I waited.

Why?

Because the cycling process is a hurdle that cannot be skipped. I only put in six Danios to cycle my tank. Yes this isn't very exciting and it is hard to put the excitement on hold while you wait for a tank to cycle. I tested water daily and did water changes almost daily for a month. I also used Dr.Tims One and Only to help the cycling process.

I joined this forum on August 19 and you joined on September 12 (16 days ago).

I haven't lost a single fish.

Why am I saying all of this? I'm really not trying to be a jerk. I have offered you advice in the the past (16 days) and I have also pointed out in the past (16 days) that you seem to ignore anything you don't want to hear. I've just finished reading through all the posts you have made since you joined and there is a pattern to your approach to fish keeping.

You seem very excited.
You don't seem to research ahead of time.
You buy impulsively.
You ignore logical well reasoned advice.
You seem shocked when things go wrong.

People have repeatedly suggested getting a test kit. You said you couldn't afford it but bought a 35 hex tank right away. Several people (me included) have given you a link to the walmart online page to order it but you claim you couldn't find it and bought test strips instead.

I know this sounds like a lecture. I suppose it probably is to some extent, but I'm also just trying to help save you money and fish and headaches.

Getting a book, getting a test kit, researching ahead of time, and being patient can make you a lot more successful at this hobby.

I respect your honesty. I jumped into this hobby head first and have a habit of making impulsive decisions as well as taking peoples advice and formulating it to fit my impulsive behavior. I'll do what I can to be more careful and smart in the future. Thank you.

Cool... You take constructive criticism well I have to say. I was halfway cringing at what your response may be but am now pleasantly surprised.

Rock on!:headbang2:
