I have a planted tank. Live plants are best and can only benefit fish but they need considerable light. Live plants suitable for an extremely low light tank is java moss and java fern. Maybe anubia or crypts. But I'd go with plastic for now.
About the aquaclear filter, I think a AC300 would be better for a 29 gallon. Get sponges and biomax inserts. You should really buy the filter online. You can get brand new ones on ebay for like $20.00. Or petsmart.com, and hundreds of other sites. Standard pet stores charge wayyy too much. ...OK nevrmnd u have one already. lol Um I'd definitely add some biomax. The sponge is more mechanical filtration and holds some bacteria but the ceramic biomax beads have thousands of tiny pores that are ideal for establishing large colonies of bacteria for the all important biological filtration.
I'd add a few more plants, maybe in the background. Fish like to feel secure. Make sure you get lots of advice on cycling. This is when most people lose fish after fish. You MUST establish a working bacterial colony before fish. You need to add fish slowly over a month or two. The bactria needs time to increase with the increase in fish waste. Without this bacterial colony, you will lose fish after fish after fish.
Some common fish to avoid: common pleco, chinese algae eater. common plecos and chinese algae eaters (algae eaters) both get a foot long and the chinese algae eaters will eat your fish not algae. Blala Sharks: Bala sharks get huge. Large-mouthed catfishes with large whiskers will eat smaller fish. Tiger barbs get bigger than u expect and are mean to almost everyone. arrowanas, most cichlids (unless its a cichlid tank) except rams and angel fish. Research fish first.
Good guys: Oto catfish are better algae eaters, are tiny and peaceful. Cories are an ideal catfish and require a group of at least 4. If you really want a pleco, you can do a clown, rubber nose, or bristle nose, they stay small. Dwarf gouramies, honey, moonlight, and pearl gouramies are great. If you get gouramies, get only one male and then one or two females. Males will fight. and I'd stay away from the three spot (gold, blue, opaline, platinum) gouramies and kissing gouramies. Tetras and barbs need at least 6 individuals of the same species and look their best in a group. Livebearers are some of the easiest fish to keep and will have TONS of babies. They include mollies, swordtails, platies, guppies.
