Inexpensive DIY 24x7 Drip Water Change System

Rallysman, how often do you clean the gravel? I generally use the gravel vac as a dual purpose tool weekly - for cleaning AND water changes. So your system is VERY exciting to DH and I for the water change part because of where our tank is (hard to get at for conventional water changes, but could work really well with your system). But I am concerned about all the mulm that will accumulate on and in the substrate (sand in my case). Please advise... we're planning on trying to build your very cool system after we get the 65g all set up (unfortunately we won't be able to do this with that tank - wahhh!).

My tank is heavily stocked and has the biggest crapper of them all.......a foot long royal pleco. I swear it craps more that it eats, making it a crap factory.
Anyway, I only vac the gravel about once a month. Most of the time I have a power head in the bottom to keep the crap stirred up (so the filter gets most of it).
Sometimes it builds up to where you can actually see it, but the nitrates never raise.
If you check out some of my other threads you'll see what kind of beasts are foul that water.

Hey no one thinks a butt crack sticking out of the pants is prittier. Just stick with you current job and keep the DIY's comming. Becouse this would turn my stummic.

Rallysman, thanks for the encouragement and clarification. I'm not really familiar with how to use or place a powerhead for what you use it for (stirring the crap up for the filter - love the concept!). I however have sand and flourite substrate - would a powerhead be a bad idea? I have visions of a sand storm in the tank all the time... YUCKY! If there a way to make it work with my substrate in the 55g, I would love to have a pic of your tank to see how/where you use the powerhead. Thanks!
