I will be planning a trip to Minnesota soon, and wondered if anyone who has been there (better yet, those who live there) can offer advice on the area, what to do, what NOT to do, and so on.

I am going to a resort in Nisswa, MN for any of you who are interested. It is north of Minneapolis.

PS: Is it really true that Minnesota is known for its BUGS? And if so, what time of year?

Not sure about bugs, but I found this:

"PUBLIC DISPLAYS OF AFFECTION. The Minnesota Department of Education
discourages "displays of affection in hallways" on the grounds that such
displays "may offend others" and are "heterosexist."
"

... :D

I live in Minnesota!! Well its known for the Mosquitos and that is due to all the wetland areas around here. Its a beautiful state during the summer and late spring but this also prime time for bug season. Now the problem is, if we are having a drought year, I wouldnt worry about to many bugs. This past winter we have had an unusual dry winter. Hardly any snow. I say that now with a major snow storm coming in the next few days.

I'll remember that! :D

Yeah I just heard that Minnesota was full of bugs EVERYWHERE so I thought I'd check into it. I didn't know much about the state, or what is considered a tourist attraction so I'm checking in here. ;)

PS: I'm going for a wedding but will stay for a week.

There won't be any bugs at least until the end of April, so you'll be fine. It's still cold here, currently a balmy 28 degrees outside. :)

Not sure what kinds of things you like to do. You a city slicker or are you looking to explore the great outdoors? Give me an idea of what kinds of things you like to do and I'll post a few ideas for you.

I think he should go to Bemiji and feed the bears while covered in Honey!!

True, he can, or he can find himself with a nice little pack of Coyotes and that would just as entertaining.
lol

But I think we do see bugs here in late april. As soon as the weather gets up to 55 degrees, they start a buzzing in the day. And the average highs for late april is in the mid to low 60's, Per the Weather Channel. :D

I can't wait. Give me warm weather, I could care less if I have to have bugs with it. I'm ready for some HIKING!!!! Erm, as soon as I'm fully recovered from this pneumonia, that is. Watch out for that upper respiratory thing that's making the rounds in the Minneapolis area. I know several people that have ended up w/ pneumonia as a result of it.

Ok, but back on topic:

Touristy stuff:

Mall of America. (Has an aquarium...) (Not that close to where you'll be though)

Minnesota Zoo (Has an aquarium too :p ) Again, not close to you, but...

Many different casinos. I think you might be sorta-kinda close to the Grand Casino at Mille Lacs. Good buffet and the restaurant makes AWESOME biscuits and gravy! They have shows on weekends, so you might want to see who's scheduled for the weekend you'll be there, if you're not entirely busy with the wedding: http://www.grandcasinosmn.com/home/GrandCasinoHome.aspx

That's all I can really think of for that sort of thing. Also, there is downtown Minneapolis and St. Paul, but though I work downtown, I don't hang out there, so I know nothing about it really.

As far as outdoorsy things go, try the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources for all the state parks: http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/index.html
They also have activities every weekend, just not at every park.

Oh, I thought of one more thing, but again down in the Twin Cities area. Both the Minnesota Zoo and the Science Museum of Minnesota have IMAX theatres.

I hope some of that helps you figure out a few fun things to do. :)
