Just curious as to how much the initial cost of your 100g+ tanks were.

I'm getting a 180 setup for $800, it includes:
180g tank (long and wide) w/glass lids
black painted wood stand
AQ500 filter (I'll probably buy an additional one)
Light strip (adequate for what I'm keeping)
100lbs. of gravel (may need more)
300w heater
water conditioner + live bacteria

Let me know what you think, thanks.

Sounds about right.

I've seen the 100 plus setups go for 500 or more.

That's a decent price. I am looking at a 125 gallon though and am already over a grand just on tank, lids, lights, filters and ehaters. Some things about your setup: You already seem to know it is under filtered. Not to be alarmist, but it's very underfiltered. Even doubling it just gets it to a little over 5 times total water volume turned over per hour. If it were me, I'd have 3 AC500s on that bad boy. Also, the heating is way under par for that tank. The standard rule is 5 watts per gallon. For a 125 I was looking at two 250 Watt heaters and felt it would be sufficient since winters here are mild and the central heating stays set at 73 degrees. So, be prepared to spend a little more. Most of my budget is going into lights because I want 3 Watts per gallon for my plants. I'll be building a stand myself to save the dough. Good luck, and when it's set up, please post pics!

SoCal,

I'd say you did pretty good, especially with all the "throw in" stuff you got.
I just bought a rectangular 125 gallon acrylic tank and black painted stand. The tank came with 1 48 inch hood and T8 light fixture. Cost $733.00 out the door. I've been all over my area and this was a decent price for acrylic. I did find glass tanks a little cheaper. So far with gravel, lava rocks (these can be pricey for the really cool ones), fake plants, lights, canister filter, media, power heads, and misc. crap I'm around $1200.00. I've also got a black painted canopy on order for around $175.00...ouch. I expect that by the time I'm done I'll have around $1400.00 in it. And I already had some things I'll be using from my 55!

Thanks guys, I should've known that even 2 AQ500 wouldn't be enough. Especially with the heavy load that this tank will have (large oddballs).

I will either go with 4 AQ500's or 4 eheim canisters or something, and 2 more 300w heaters unless they carry higher wattage heaters.

Harlock: You can look forward to a floodgate of pics once it's fully setup in about 2-4 weeks.

What kind of large oddballs do you have in mind?

Sounds very neat.

Wow, these prices seem like a lot to me... I got my 125g tank, glass tops, 2 36" strip lights, UGF, 3 power heads, 1 300 watt heater and a stick on thermometer for $429.

Bought my stand and canopy used for $300 (solid oak, custom made by a cabinet maker)

Wow....I guess I was luckier than I thought with mine, 125, stand w/3 drawers, both glass canopies and light strips, 2 5 gallon buckets full of gravel ( have no idea of the weight..heavy!! ) 2 Emperor 400's, heater ( can't remember the wattage, but holds nice and steady at 79* ) more fake plants and rocks than I could use ( anyone need some? ) decorations, and about 20 fish that had to be adopted in the processas well as miscellaneous stuff.....$450.00... :dance Though, the catch was I had to break it down and move it..and clean it..was the nastiest tank I had ever seen. The water was so bad I thought there was only about 7-8 fishies in it...turned out there were quite a few more!
