Initial cost of your 100+ tank?

I bought my 210 w/ glass lids for $750 new, built a stand for about $85, picked up 500W of heat for about $40, $50 for a light strip, and so far I've dumped $240 into the filtration (2 XP3's and a Penguin 350).

wow! You guys paid 700-800 for your setups?

I got a steal for 400 which includes both the tank, and oak stand.

i just shelled out $799.00 day before yesterday when i ordered my 130g
that was the price before tax, but i go to this lfs every week, so they paid the tax for me, so i saved about $50

the $799.00 covered the tank, honey pine cabinet stand, glass tops, strip light and canopy. cant wait till it gets here friday!

oh, and theyre also giving me a 15% discount on anything i buy the following week involving the setup (ie. the extra gravel i'll need, new filter and some slate/driftwood.)

Sounds good. I kinda knew I was getting a good deal since I'm friends with the guy that owns the store. I didn't have to pay sales tax!($66)

I'll be keeping a couple Oscars, an Arowana, Redtail cat, Green Terror, a Flowerhorn, and a regular and albino senegalus.

The great thing about this tank is that it was custom designed by the store owner. He called the aquarium manufacturer that he buys from and asked them to double the length of one of the wide and tall tanks they make, and they did. I'm not sure on the exact dimensions but I'll have all this posted when I get it.

Some people have gotten very good deals. Here's what I am looking at so far for mine:
  • 125 gallon tank: 290.00
  • Glass Cover: 52.00
  • Coralfe 36" FW 2x96 Watt Power Compact Strip Light x2: 379.98
  • Rena Filstar XP3 x3: 299.97
  • Tronic 200 Watt Heater x3: 53.97
And that has me over $1100.00 already. As I said, being a planted tank, the lights are my biggest expense. If I were only going to keep fish, this would be much easier and less expensive. Obviously with this tank I'll want pressurized CO2 as well. Livestock alone will cost me a lot when you look at it all together. Then, plants of course. Luckily I am more patient with them, so I can use my current tanks to propagate and start building up my plants now. I plan on building a stand. I have an Uncle in town that does a lot of woodwork and has uilt cabinets, tables, etc. So, I'll go around the internet find some plans for DIY cabinets and then pay for materials and get his help and borrow his garage and tools. This way I can give the stand the custom look and finish that makes it furniture and fits the reast of the living room decor, so my wife will be really pleased.

I would not get the redtailed catfish.

They get way too big.

The other fish are fine.

I bought a 150 gallon Rubbermaid stock tank to house my big fish but they are more deep than long.

And they are designed for the farm, not exactly keeping fish but they work!

If you need a good quarentine tank for big fish, I suggest one of these. About 100 dollars or more at the local farm store.

i would generally say that midsized tanks 50-100 gallons will run about $10/gal after you are setup and running. my 55gal with 15 gal sump will run me about $600 after RO unit and plants. Most of the fish i will have so with new fish it would run me about $650. Bigger tanks are probably more like $12-$15/gal as a rule of thumb. If you get into crazy lights and co2 and flourite that is another story!!!
