Inspired You?

hey plah, im also thinking about majoring in marine/aquatic biology in college. must be great living near the Monterey Bay Aquarium, do you work there or plan to work there? or do you just go visit it from time to time?

hey, ice! I do plan to work there as an Aquarist. I'm going to intern first, so they don't have anything to risk by taking me on. I do visit it as much as I can, as it's one of my favorite places in the whole world. BTW, Jadis's avvy is the anchovy tank at the MBA :)

My lab has some ties to the Aquarium, in that they will accompany us on collecting trips sometimes. And we'll send interesting specimens their way, too. They also give us specimens sometimes. Like the catsharks I'm doing my thesis on, they keep in permanent quarantine. I don't know why, except that they're not especially pretty to look at (kind of an ugly brown color) and are probably just keeping them in the back for educational purposes. Those guys will lay egg cases quite often, and my labmate goes down there every week to pick those up. We've been trying to raise the egg cases at our lab, but none have survived past a few weeks. The cases will hatch, but the babies won't eat and they starve :( That's why I try to discourage people from getting sharks for their home tanks.

Thanks for asking!

Well, i know this sounds weird comming from a 24 year old, but i was inspired by the tank my parents set up in my bedroom when i was a child (5 or 6 ish). We left the light on 24/7 (i know, bad idea, alge was always a problem) and it acted as my night light. When i was scared at night i would look at my fish and everything seemed ok again because they didnt look scared. To this day, i still find watching my fish very relaxing. gotta go, in the middle of a water change. (love the python)

when i was six, my parents put a 10g in my room as a night light with the lights on 24/7 too! i remember it having 2 angelfish, 6 neons, and a crab.

When I was little we used to go to the Toledo Zoo (great zoo!) several times per year. My favorite part was always the aquarium. The halls were really dark and the building was old but I loved it. It was my first chance to see sharks, octopi, etc. I still like to go back there when I am in town.

My interest in this hobby only took off this past August. During the summer I spent quite a bit at my friend Lee's house and he had a 55 gallon planted tank. I'd just sit in his living room for hours watching the tank and I was totally content. I found it soothing and the variety of fish he had made the tank very interesting. So I purchased my beta and got a "Beta kit" which consisted of a half gallon bowl, unfiltered, unlit and unheated death trap! Soo I asked for a 20 Gal aquarium for my B-Day. Got that set up and put my beta in a proper home. I've fallen for the hobby ever since and am going for a 55 gallon tank this summer!

My Aunt owned an LFS my whole life so I was always around fish. I think she gove me my first tank when I was 2. Of course my parents took care of it. They also always had tanks up. Always community tanks. When I really got into the hobby was after H.S. when I bought a 90 gallon and an Oscar who I decided not to keep long lol. Still have the 90 up and running along with a 30 and a 20. I used to have 2 55's as well but sold them when I moved due to lack of room. I have some empty tanks too that I just need room to set up lol.

Can You Say Imaginary Friend

I was never allowed pets as a kid. So I had Sarah the invisible fish who lived in a small glass bubble bath bottle with a cork lid. Sarah finally moved into a 20g tank in my 20's, then was upgraded to a 40g hex in my 30's, and now am back down to a 20gal. Planning on giving Sarah a grand cathedrial for her big retirement party. :p:

My father had a fish room with rows and rows of tanks. He used to breed mollies and guppies. At the time I could not understand his fascination with fishkeeping and it wasn't until my daughter brought home a little rosey barb when she was in the third grade that I really got into this whole fishkeeping thing. We set up a little five gallon tank for her rosey barb. That was more then ten years ago and now I have seven aquariums in my home.
