I have recently taken over my sisters 4 gallon because it is sitting empty with nothing but snails in there. I would love to turn it into a invertebrates only tank, and I was thinking of Red Cherry Shrimp? Anyother Suggestions?? But I was wondering, I am going to get a heater, but the tank it self, the only filter type thing is a small tube running up from the undergravel filter. And my sis said that it came with just a air stone down in the tube, it is not the same diameter as my undergravel filter, but what do you think I shouled do?? I would love to have the tank, got the perfect spot, but I dont want to spend more than 10 dollars on it. And the heater doesn't Count, I plan on using one of those mini heaters, but for the filter what do you suggest?? The tank has gotten BAD before, I mean like dirty, filthy disgusting, the water is bad even when I do changes. Please help me by having a solution for a cheap under 10 dollar filter thing that will work for this. Or is the one now ok? Thanks for any help.....

I have not had much luck maintaining an invert tank under 10 gallons. It can be done, but they are somewhat picky about water conditions, and it's hard to maintain in a small tank. Maybe save up your money and invest in at least a 10 gallon if you really want inverts?

I was thinking about just a regular sponge filter, connected to the air pump, what do you think about that?? BTW the reason I want it is because it will fit on my bookshelf which a ten, alas will not,

What about this?

Instead, I figured out the tank is only a gallon :(

Any inverts I can keep in there? I doubt it but, I might upgrade to the first one, but I dont know if its plastic or glass, or what, if its glass then its a definat yes. Basically I want an invert tank that I can use to raise shrimp and sell a couple to my lfs and I want it to fit on my book shelf...

And it seems pointless to spend so much money on a 1 gallon,

I would buy a test kit first. Then, second, I would either buy a bigger tank for your other fish or rehome them. To ship Cherry shrimps, most members here charge 50 cents to 1 dollar per cherry shrimp, and shipping is about 8 dollars. So you will be spending a lot more than 10 dollars, maybe 30 dollars for just the shrimp and heater, not including the lights, tank, plants, substrate, etc.

The bookshelf aquarium (first one) is 6.6 gallons. I have three of them and love them. They are onsale online at PetCo for $39.99.
