I have had my sevrum for almost 2 years, and about 8 months ago i noticed that his top fin was missing some. I thought he was just getting picked on, but it hs not grown back, and he is not gettting picked on by anything else. Could this just be somthing genetic, or somthing like fin rot? Thanx
It is a Blue Severum... is there anyother fish in the tank looking the same way? Do you have a hospital tank or quarantine tank.. if you do put it in there and treat it with melafix for a week. If the fins arent growing back.... then its gotta be something genetic in the fish.... Good Luck and great looking fish! I am currently looking for a blue severum and i cant find one! I have a gold, and a green! They are wonderful fish!
First off. Picture 1 most certainly does look like a severum.
Peifc: You have taken enough pictures of your fish to know what happens if you take a shot of a fish on an angle? It makes the fish look warped and elongated. I truly surprised that you missed it. You normally have one of the best set of eyes when iding fish that I have ever seen.
A blue severum seems to be the newest way that some suppliers and stores are now pushing the darker small green severums. The juvies that my breeding pairs produce always have a good number of fish that have that blueish tinge to them when they are small. It usually depends on the angle you look at the fish and the lighting of the tank. They tend to turn a darker color than the rest and have the stripes less pronounced.
Now as for the fish. It most probably was getting picked on. What tends to happen with fins is.
If the fin ray also gets munched on most times it will grow back normally. Except if it forms a ball (for lack of a better term) The ray will look normal but at the end where it was nipped it forms a growth that looks like a calcium ball. If that happens the ray will not grow back.
It is hard to see from the picture, but if it has been that long and it hasn't grown back chances are that is what has happend.
