Thanks for all your wonderful comments.....
The water for this system comes from my tap water source. Luckily I have a well, so no chlorine/chloramine removal is needed. I am using unsoftened cold water and softened hot water at this time. All water that makes it to the tanks passes thru a 3 stage filtration system that finishes with a 2 micron filter. The water here is very hard, and has some iron in it. The 30 micron filter turns slightly orange from the iron after about 200-300 gallons. I figure I'll have to change it bi-weekly or so. A small price indeed for not having to do water changes on all these tanks.
What brand filtration system are you using? If it uses the standard pleated polyester cartridges, they can be cleaned using a solution of Super Iron Out multi-purpose Rust Stain Remover and COLD water. While this does not remove any fine particles, it is perfectly safe to remove the orange color from the iron. Just make sure you rinse it very well before putting back into service.
I have a standard R-30 (micron) 20" sediment filter in my private well water supply line that I clean this way. I keep a couple spare filter cartridges clean for easy filter maintenance. They can be reused multiple times.
I made a 'soaking' tank from a 30" length of 4" PVC and solvent welded a flat cap on the bottom. Then dry fit a filter holder using two 1/2" CPVC tees and a 24" length of pipe. One tee fits on the bottom of the pipe, the filter slides over the pipe and the other tee is the handle. I also use a 4" cap as a temporary lid to keep the odor contained and in case of accidental tip overs due to rowdy cats.
I mix the Iron Out solution, according to the pkg. directions, and fill the 4" PVC tank to the appropriate height. I pre-clean the used filter with a hose sprayer in the laundry tub to get rid of large particles first. Then slide the filter cartridge over the filter holder. The top tee acts as a handle to plunge the cartridge up and down in the soaking tank to thoroughly wet the filter. The bottom tee keeps the filter off the bottom of the soaking tank. I usually leave it in the soaking tank for a day or two. Then remove the cartridge and rinse thoroughly in tap water until the smell is gone. You can also do a bleach rinse and then air dry the cartridge until the next use. I have used the same cartridge until it gets too worn or plugged up with fine particles for at least six cleanings. I have also reused the Iron Out solution a couple times before disposing of it.
I love your fish room setup. Excellent job detailing everything.
PLEASE, do NOT mix bleach and Iron Out together. Iron Out contains sodium hydrosulfite & sodium bisulfite and should not be mixed with any other cleaner or chemical. Follow the pkg directions properly. I use rubber gloves when mixing the solution and avoid breathing the vapors as they are very strong.
