I've joined the dark side. Soon to be manager of the Petland Lancaster fish dep.

i agree with the removing the dead fish and will your store q the fish they get or no

I really like the "giving the cycled filter material from the store so people can cycle their tanks with it" idea. You could but it in a mesh or nylon stocking and hang it in a fish tank. If you use hard filter media (lava rock), sell it by the half-pound. If you use filter floss, sell it by 9 square inches (3"x3"). I'll let you decide on what to set the price at. If you use a central main filter for all the tanks, make sure as to not sell more than 2/3 of it every 2-3 weeks.

And yeah, remove the dead fish as soon as you see them. And have the employees do a "sweep" of every fish tank for dead fish every 1/2 hour.

Good luck with the job, hope it goes well. :)

Make sure it doesn't come from tanks that have not been properly QT'd and disease free.

Yes a good QT system for new arrivals, and disease control systems would be an excellent starting point (including designated equipment - nets etc. for QT/Treatment tanks).

Gotta love the stores that are confident enough to mark tanks as 'QT' or 'Not for sale - recent arrivals' or 'Under Treatment - not for sale' when appropriate and what not, and to not sell from those tanks. Really gives you more peace of mind for what you do buy.

one of the lfs around me has their q tanks in the back but has a white board on the door and it has what is in the tanks and when they should be coming to the front

The filter media was a great suggestion. I've floated bio-balls in all of the tanks. That way once they are seeded i can sell some of those to help jump a cycle.

Also someone left the fill tube running on one of the sumps when they opened. I came in to find 27 dead fish. As all of the good water had drained out and was replaced with un chlorinated tap water. grr.

I'm working on my first fish order right now. about a 2/3rds have to be the typical sellers (feeders, guppys, mollys, swords etc) I plan on getting some rare/exotic to give for the last 2/3rds.

Yea i am holding off on the salt stuff for right now till i get the fresh straightened out. My next big thing is to change out all of the substrate for sand. and agronite for the chiclids.

I have a cool idea for an open reef display down the road. I'll be using this with lights mounted from the celling. I'll have a center mounted overflow, with a 20 gallon sump. I'll have coral piled up around the center overflow.

Tell us more!:headbang2:
Once i figure out what i'm ordering ill be making more species cards. Ive worked open to close this whole week. lol so if it takes a little bit to reply. i'll get to it at some point.

oh and for or freshwater side. we use a marineland commercial biowheel setup up. Every 12 tanks have there own sump and pump. But all are on a central drain, and all are fed from the same source when filling. Other than that all each 12 are separate.

i patrol every 30-45mins or so checking the tanks. We don't have alot of stock right now. it was really let go. I got alot of work to make it up to my standards. I do have enough tanks for qt, but with barely any stock id have to convince them, to go a whole week without sales to make sure the fish are ok. :/. my other option is to pick up the fish myself when i place the order. Are local distributor is only 15mins away from my apt, and the owner of it lives in the apt next to me. lol talk about a small world.

i'm working on getting more nets, and some netsoak fluid. We don't even have any of those plastic dip boxes that hang on the side of the tank. sigh. I do know each sump has its own UV sterilizer.
