I apologize for the double post--I posted this earlier on the newbie forum, but I realized my question fits better over here. The solo inhabitant of my 10 gal tank (an aging gourami) died this morning. I am not going to buy a new fish for the tank, but there is a lot of java fern in there I'd like to keep alive until January, when I upgrade to a 55. Is there anything special I need to do to keep java fern alive, with no fish to care for? For example, do I still need to run the filter? Do I still need to do water changes, and if so, how often? And do I still need to use a chlorine/chloramine remover? Thanks for the help.

Why not invest in some Red Cherry shrimp and make it a shrimp tank?

I did consider that, or just getting some tetras but 1) I want to have the 10 gal as a hospital/QT tank in the future, and 2) I'll have house-sitters in my apt. for almost a month in the winter, between now and the time I get the 55 gal, so I don't want them having to care for any more fish than I already have (what I already have are the guys in a 20 gal who are going in the 55 when I get it). I thought of putting all the plants in the 20, but there's not really enough room. So I think I'll just leave them in the 10 until I upgrade--I'm just trying to decide if I need to keep the filter running and do regular water changes when there's only plants in a tank....

Yes, I would keep some form of water movement. Yes, I would do occasional water changes. No chlorine/chloramine remover unless you have fish.

tpm cometh........
