Journey's journey into SW Aquaria

Ordered Fish...a little impulsively

So, bad, bad news. I went to my LFS yesterday prepared to buy my first store bought fish. I planned to start with a yellow watchman goby and add a clown later. I was all set. I get there. Someone had just taken off with MY goby. I look toward the clown fish....aching to take a fish home...
no fish to be taken safely....their clowns were huge. GRRR. But, the far worse news is that my favorite guy that works there, is leaving. Which leaves the owner. Who makes my heart get all racy with irritation each time I go in.
So, frustrated I decide to go home and spend my money online.

Wellllll - the thing with that is that the shipping charges are out of control right now. 30$ shipping on a 15$ fish! After several hours of "shopping" I find a site with "free" shipping (this turned out to be a flat fee for all items but still cheaper than any other) so I get to shopping. Now, with the flat fee I found myself just putting everything in the shopping cart I might need...after all, I don't want to realize I missed something and then have to pay a separate shipping fee later! Right!? Yeah, Yeah so here are the fishies coming to my home this week:

A osc. tank raised clown
A cherub pygmy angel
A yellow watchman goby

Uh, yup...that would be three. And me doing some series water changes initially to make sure I'm managing a big bioload introduction.

Flog me now.

I have also been looking at introducing more greenery into the aquascape, mostly because everyone in the tank has eaten all of it, it is pretty, and I'm hoping it will help manage my nitrates. Everything I come across at the LFS comes with the warning of not putting it into the display tank as it could spread uncontrollably. So, I bought one of those plastic boxes the LFS uses to put your new fish into your plastic bag (assuming someone didn't just steal your new fish) and I'm going to drill a bunch of holes in it for flow and put my greenery in there. Maybe will add a real fuge later but we'll see how this works first! It was 3$ so there's nothing to lose by experimenting.

Have all three day time fish in this shot! Cherub Angel (Gwendolyn), Clown (Flick), Yellow Watchman Goby (Barney Rubble) - the nocturnal cardinal is hiding (McGyver).

I've recently added some fish - the clown, goby, and cherub angel. I've removed a peppermint shrimp today who was enormous and thought he should eat my coral. His brother is well behaved and still in the tank but he better watch it. I also added recently a xenia which is at the very top. There is also a yellow polyp coral (don't know if there is a fancier name) and some zoas. Love to hear what you think.

Here is a pic of the mantis shrimp I took out a while back.

Meet Barney Rubble. He chews up the gravel in the tank and the excess bits come out of his gills. It's very strange to watch. He is tiny, tiny but tough...He rests his head on top of the passing hermit crabs. It's his world.

Please excuse my ghetto box in the corner of the tank but I'm experimenting with a homegrown pseudo-fuge. I'll let you know if my Trates drop!

No problem. Wondering why you would go through a third party (your supplier) when you could go direct? http://www.tampabaysaltwater.com/

Here is a link is to a pic of a pygmy cherub angel...didn't want to infringe on any copyright stuff. My gal won't be still long enough for me to get a shot. Her name is Gwen(dolyn).

Here is a pic of our McGyver who hitchhiked in on a batch of live rock and survived a long boat ride back to the dock in a barrel full of live rock on rolling ocean!

stunning tank you got there. I didn't read anything because it was just too much to read, but I wanted to note that the rock you got is some of the best rock that I have seen. please, tell me who you buy your stuff from, because that guy really tries to make his customers happy. on the second note, I assume that you have high light by looking at your nice anemone, and if I were you, I would move sponges into the area where not a drop of aldgae shows, like nicely shaded area. I think they do get the light where they are and it's not good for them long term. also, I would check into light needs of your gorgonias or sea fans, because some don't need light just like tree sponges, and algae can kill them too. forgive me if you already know everything that I just said or if someone already noted this.
