Jpappy's CP setups

Sweet! I need to get a ping or two... eventually. LOL

Nice pings. I've been meaning to get some new ones, but after my moctezumae died, I've been a little hesitant to getting anymore.

I'm going to give true dormancy a try this year. My moctezumae and a few of the other "unidentified" ones had very nice growth spurts this spring but I've noticed they slowed down quite a bit and I'm wondering if forcing them to keep growing 24/7/365 put too much of a strain on them...the moctezumae kind of went into a succulent spell but nothing drastic.

What do you mean it went into a succulent spell?

Mexican pings form succulent-like leaves during dormancy instead of completely dying back. I believe my moctezumae went through a short period of that last winter however I didn't do anything external to induce it...

Cool. That's why I don't have any pings yet... don't know much about them.

So it sounds like their dormancy requirements are more based on moisture than temp. Is that about right?

In their natural environment, pretty much, but it is generally a bit cooler too. Oddly enough I don't remember ever letting the tray dry out. I've also read that people often take cues from the plants, so maybe they are able to preemptively start changing leaves? I dunno.

I think I'm gonna have to get out the book and do some reading. Thanks for the info!
