Jpappy's planted 20 gallon long "build" thread

So the more I think about it, the more I'm changing my mind on going with "nano" fish for this tank and go for some more eye popping fish rather than search for things among the plants.

I'm thinking more along the lines of some blue eyes (Pseudomugil), either gertrudae or probably furcatus...Dwarf chain loaches (A. sidthimunki, never realized it was renamed)...and peacock gudgeons. I'm looking for something else possibly for the top part of the tank, possibly a small Anabantoid species.

Suggestions welcome!

Thinking about doing something like this when the time comes...

6-8 furcatas
6-8 sids
4(?) peacock gudgeons
3-4 otos

Possibly a honey gourami...or maybe a T. vittata if I could ever find one? Not sure yet whether I would even have room. I tend to not stock so liberally.

Love the wood & plants jpappy! Good luck with the waterlogging, lol. I'm not sure but it seems like sids might be a bit rowdy with the lower level gudgeons. It sounds like it'd be awesome...if it works. Have you ever checked out rosy loaches? I have some & they are very pretty in a cherry barb way, a tiny bit shy but wonderful in my 20g long...or yunanilus cruciatus (Vietnamese hovering loaches), I have them in the same tank. Honey gouramis sound very cool...but again sids & boisterous behavior? I try to convince myself I have room for them, they look so good!

Looking forward to seeing this one progress, Pap. Interesting choices for fauna.

I asked Chrisinator over on TPT (not sure if he's on AC much anymore) what he thought about it and he said it might be ok so long as the gudgeons have enough hideaway spots in the tank. If I go with them, I would definitely add more hardscape. As for the honey gouramis, I had a large group of sids in a 30g with female bettas...granted, the bettas are a bit more hardy than a honey gourami and there's less room. Definitely will be thinking it over.

If you ever get room, I highly recommend sids. Such a fun fish to have!

Oh, when did you switch from N Mich to Fla? Did you get tired of the winters or what, lol? Switch your major?

I'm starting a graduate program this week. Don't get me wrong, I like winters but it's a nice change of pace...but central Florida in August? Ugh.

Thanks Slap! I'm pretty excited for the stock if things work out. Always wanted some blue eyes and peacock gudgeons, figure since I only have one tank right now I might as well give it a shot!

I really like the tank so far. Thanks for sharing the progress. That tank looks a whole lot bigger than 20g though. Probably just the pictures, but I was like whoa. :grinyes:

Nice moonlights! Just checking in with the school stuff, lol...my husband is thinking a college gig before really retiring might be good but I say NO to N. Mich...especially after N. Cali for 2 years...we're spoiled! I'll be following along with your new tank! Go honey gouramis...I'll watch for how sids may do with them, it'd be good if it works...Go with grad school!..what is it again...?

Hey, I say stick with N. Cali. Only visited San Fran once but loved it, would be a cool area to end up. I really liked the UP for my 4 undergrad years but I couldn't imagine living there for much longer. So many outdoors things to do, but not much else. Starting a PhD program in Soil and Water Science at UF. Muckin through the swamps!

Still a bit hesitant on adding an anabantoid. But I've always wanted to try honey gouramis...hate making decisions.
