Jurupari ?'s

no news on the new tank front, although I am planning on picking up 1 or 2 more once I move stock into the 37. So for now I'll have 3 3-4" Jurupari's in my 55 gallon, with a small syno, and two BN's. I'm going to try and upgrade to a 125, although it's going to take a LOT of convincing...

Why are you getting them for a 55g, when you've been told they need bigger? You don't even know if you will be able to upgrade.

Good luck UN!! Keep checking craigs list, although they have tons of BS, you can catch some great deals if you keep watching. Also watch for petsmart sales, I have never been lucky enough to catch one, but I know sometimes they have that $1.00/gal sale.

Got any pics? I LOVE THESE GUYS!!!

Tay, I feel bad right now because he spends a lot of time staring at the glass, and I want to try and get him a friend or two. Since these guys are slow growers, and I'm getting them small I should have plenty of time to upgrade.

Thanks LG, I'll try to get some tonight!

Your intentions are good, but you know as well as I do that a lot of people "plan" to upgrade and that rarely actually happens. The fact that the upgrade isn't totally up to you makes it even less likely that the fish will get the size of tank that they need. With these guys being slow growers, you do have the option of growing them out and trading them in someday if you are unable to properly house them.

How long do you think it will take these guys to grow 2-3 inches? I'm hoping to upgrade by the time they get to 6".

Well, I know for a fact that I can upgrade in 3 1/2 years (moving out), and I can probobly get them at least a 75 by this christmas. Tay, I know exactly what you mean. I feel like I should just return him (never thought he was so social and got so big) and get some keyholes or apistos.

As much as it sucks, I think returning him is the best decision. You're not alone in wanting a fish that you can't really keep so I'm not trying to beat you down. I hope you can see that. :)

Yup I think your best option is returning it till you can get the proper tank. When I had bought my Parachromis loisellei's I kept saying I was going to upgrade so many times that I got tired of saying it and not falling through. I did end up upgrading but no where near the amount of time I wanted. I purchased some other Parachromis sp.'s a few months ago and now need to find new homes despite them still being small I wont have the space to setup aquariums for them.

We all make mistakes and most of us have bought fish we knew we shouldn't have at one point or another but if we could learn from our own mistakes then that's a plus. Just stick with some medium sized fish that don't need a social setting. There are many options. Just do a bit of research and I'm sure you'll find something to put in there that could stay there long term without needing an upgrade.

I'm not sure what your living situation is but I would keep them for a couple of months. They will be fine in the mean time and if it looks like you cant upgrade in 6months or so then sell them. If you are living with your parents maybe they will take a liking to them and decide that an upgrade would be worth while.

Three years ago I was in the same predicament and I was able to upgrade. I have a South American Lungfish and bought him was he was a tiny 3" worm and put him in my 20g. As a college grad present my parents bought me a 55g setup to move him into. Last year I saved up money and moved him to a 150g tank. He is currently 2 feet long and basically the reason I got into fish keeping. So I guess what I'm trying to get at is if you really like these fish and believe you can upgrade I'd keep them. BUT if you can't upgrade there are plenty of fish that will be able to live in your 55 for life.
