Just gotta vent

I agree that flaming is not needed. But I have seen folks get upset about even the kindest advice, just because it was not what they wanted to hear. If we continue answering only the question asked, and not adressing the underlying issues, people wont learn(or will learn slowly at the cost of many fishy lives). In the same way, if someone asks me to change thier oil, and I notice thier wheel about to fall off, Im not going to stay quiet about the wheel just because they didn't ask about it. But like was said, answer the question first, them politely adress issues you see.

In general, if I remember giving advice and it is ignored, I will not help the people when they come calling for help on something they know they could have avoided.

Sf is totally on the money. Most often, the underlying answer involves the stocking vice the question being posed.

The tact in response is critical.

And so is the acceptance by the poster.

It was more of a post on HOW the advice was given, not the fact that it was given at all. I completely understand underlying problems can cause current problems, it's more of the delivery that i was talking about.....

Siren, you do deserve a pat on the back for posting what a lot of us feel (even though you did not intend to). I know I'm new and have made many mistakes so far (thank god no fish died because of it), and it's comforting to see that we are addressing a trend to help newbies in an understanding way. Thanks for the great post.

Thanks for the compliment, I'm glad I could help :)

I was just about to start a thread regarding this after i searched "silver dollars"(i just bought seven 8"ers for my 20g:huh: ) and in almost every thread someone was slammed for being "overstocked". Some of you should have "overstocked" as an F'ing hot key! :mad2:

Give the noobs a break...I bet there are HEAPS of accounts on this forum with only 3 posts.... 1 was the initial question and 2 trying to defend themselves from the onslaught that usually follows...

I agree in some cases something needs to be said, but it needs to be done in the right way. I would say 80% of the time something needs to be said, When something is said half the time it's done rudely, 10% of the time it's some tossa.... being a tossa, 10% of the time its some know it all noob trying to be cool by throwing "overstocked" out there because it seems like the thing to do on this forum.

Good to here something is being done about it :)

That happened to me friend too

It's a buttload of crap to tell a new aquarist "you are soooo overstocked! take them back!" 1. duh, tell them why! 2. go a bit further 3. they didn't know! they SHOULD have researched, but maybe they didn't know how... lessee... not sooo easy fish are.

Thanks Siren!

devil's advocate here....they post here and don't know how to research...??

Comes under the heading of being lazy to me. I can understand the confusion they may find from conflicting input, and then post here for clarification.

But it is unreasonable for them to assume that there won't be some sharp input when they come on with "I didn't know better".

Most people think fish will be easy, so they don't bother. Or they get just a few too many fish and then the tank gets messy. Most people see goldfish in bowls, so they buy a goldfish and a bowl. If you were never told that candy was bad for you, wouldn't you eat it all day?
