Just gotta vent

No. Murder is also bad and no one told me that. I didn't go out and do it all day to learn that.

At some level individual accountability and common sense must come into play, while politely informing them of their mis-deeds.

Well, if someone never told you that sugar was bad for you, wouldn't you eat it all day? If a newb was never told that a goldfish wasn't supposed to be in a bowl, they would put them in bowls. And people are buying painted fish because they look cool. No one ever told them they were bad.

I know this is random, but my friends buys goldfish and puts them in bowls and then puts a firecracker in :D

rbishop, are you a lawyer?

I've been following a number of posts lately in the newbie and coldwater forums...

Okay....just out of curiousity, why don't some of the people who frequent this board answer the original question before lambasting the person for having too many fish in the tank? For example, I saw someone recently ask about a simple physiological aspect of goldfish, instead of a simple answer, the first 5 posts were telling the person her fish were going to die if she didn't get them into a bigger tank FAST! Her question was pushed aside, and labled "the least of her concerns". If it wasn't a concern, she wouldn't have posted it. Maybe they are in the process of setting up a new tank/getting a new tank/thinking about seperating the fish as they get older. Maybe growing them indoors BEFORE putting them in a pond outside. We don't know any of the details, nor are we willing to give the person the benefit of the doubt. We just know the tank is overcrowded and we fall upon them like the fabled cow who was eaten by piranha.

Okay, so if the tank IS overcrowded, and the person DOES need advice about that, but every question they post does NOT need the header similar to "Your tanks is too crowded your fish are ALL going to die!!". Tone down the accusations and remember, that we aren't all expert fishkeepers and may have made the error of relying on the advice, however misguided, of our LFS staff and friends who once had fish.

We have the possibility to change the way new people care for their aquariums, but let's remember that we all were once in their same shoes, sometimes misguided and worried about our fish. I've seen this same problem a lot recently. New people come here for questions and advice, not to be bombarded every time they post. Let's educate and not guilt-trip the uninformed. They have to have a chance to learn, not put off by our own overzealousness.

Very well said.

I think we should do our best to answer the original/current OP's question.

Then maybe a polite...and I mean a very polite PM about there could be some stocking issues discussed if they posed another thread. Letting them know we are to here help.

Thats an excellent idea. Simply for the fact it will be taken more as helpfull advice as sent in private, compared to constructive critisism in public may be taken as a public stoning.

If I was an uninformed person, I might eat the sugar until I od'd.

Dogs are not supposed to be kept in 2' by 2' cages that you see in pet stores, and when you purchase one, you maintain them in sensible housing/conditions.

We all learn from our mistakes, but sometimes we have the luxury of helpful information before we make a mistake or to stop a mishap from occuring.

If people buy painted fish because they look cool, then they shouldn't own fish and do not have respect for living creatures in general.

I wouldn't go out and murder, rape or assualt people because no one had not told me it was wrong.

I would not consider your firecracker friend, a friend.

Hey, he's 12 years old!
my question is why did he even have one in the house, and then why did he put it in the fishtank? if he did not think that was wrong, who knows what he will do next.

yes that sounds pretty messed up to me too. regardless if he was 12 or 112. even my little sister would know not to do that and nobody ever told her not to. its common sense.
