Long story short, I cut my hand an hour or two ago (small scrape), and in addition, my cat often leaves scratches (that bled) on my hands.

Should I be worried about submerging a recent cut on my hand in my fish tank?

Or should I force myself to wait a day or two before diving in to re-arrange scenery and do a gravel vac?

Just how dirty is the water in our tanks?

Who knows, maybe I'll get ich!

Fish water is very unhealty for those with weakened immune systems.

For example:

MAD FISH DISEASE ... caused by STREPTOCOCCUS INIAE.

  • Recently reported from handling tilapia. Infection via puncture wounds.
  • Can cause fever, shaking, meningitis, arthritis, and skin/blood infections.
  • To protect yourself - do not handle organisms/water/tanks if you have skin breaks; do not dive if you have skin breaks; do not mouth-siphon tank water, do not ingest raw seafood, etc. Wash hands, etc. well after working on tanks, with seafood, and after diving. If punctured, or injured under water, allow the wound to bleed freely for a while to expel injected bacteria, then sterilize and protect wound.

I have eczema, and almost always have sores on my hands from it. I do the tank stuff, then make sure I wash my hands well afterward. Never had a problem. Actually, my eczema actually seems less bad after a few days of doing work in one tank or another. *shrug* Go figure. Just wash up. You should be fine. Though, it'd also be good if you knew when your last vaccinations were. If longer than ten years, get them! That should go for everyone, not just people who clean and rearrange fish tanks. :)

i never worry, heck the tanks are probably the cleanest water in the house... i dive in and just dry my arms off when im done

I read that humans can get tb from their fish. The site says that its transmittable from infected fish to humans.

yeah I stomped through some swamps that was waste water (not feces, storm waste!) fed insearch of snakes and stuff all through my teen years and never got infected or nothing so I dont think my tanks would get me..

Tank water=River water.I guess because of city/modern life that people are getting more and more infected due to the lack in immunity.I accidentally drank tank water before anyways for both my marine and freshwater :)

Actually its reverse, people living in urban centers with high population densities have stronger immune systems, since you're in contact with more nasties. The reason infections are getting stronger, is from the use of antibiotics, and the resulting tolerant strains.
